Nine in ten Japanese have drunk local wine, fruitiness main draw

Have you ever drunk Japanese wine? graph of japanese statisticsA recent survey from the brewer Kirin and their subsiduary the wine maker Mercian looked at Japanese wine consumption.

Before reading this survey, I was under the impression that most Japanese wine was made on an industrial scale with imported grapes, and that even Mercian was one of these fake wines, and any local wines was very niche and difficult to get hold of. I’ve now had my interest piqued, so I’ll maybe hunt some out. However, the only wine I drink is Saizeriya’s 100 yen gut-rot special (interestingly, they are the largest importer of Italian wine, it seems!) and whatever wine ends up on the all-you-can-drink menu at work booze-ups.

Beaujolais nouveau special: tedious wine buffs

Since today is the release of Beaujolais nouveau, still a big event in Japan, here is a special goo Ranking survey into what self-styled wine buffs drone on about.

Demographics

Over the 5th and 6th of October 2012 1,064 members of the goo Research monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 58.2% of the sample were female, 10.5% in their teens, 13.7% in their twenties, 26.6% in their thirties, 27.6% in their forties, 11.7% in their fifties, and 9.9% aged sixty or older. Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample.

No, I don’t have a clue about drinking wine in a bath robe!

Le Beaujolais Nouveau est arrivé!

DIMSDRIVE Research investigated the Japanese love of fads, this time Beaujolais Nouveau, due this coming Thursday the 17th. I think the only time I’ve ever drunk the stuff (I’m mildly allergic to something in red wine that puts me under the table after less than a glassful, and I’m not keen on the taste either) was in my favourite Soba Noodles shop that was serving free thimblefuls of last year’s left overs as an appetiser one day. However, it seems over half the Japanese interviewed want to drink Beaujolais Nouveau.
