japan.internet.com recently reported on a survey by goo Research looking at mobile phone manners, but sadly only presenting a very small subset of the results.
Demographics
Between the 19th and 22nd of December 2011 1,074 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 52.4% of the sample were male, 16.7% in their teens, 18.4% in their twenties, 21.5% in their thirties, 16.1% in their forties, 15.5% in their fifties, and 11.% aged sixty or older.
When I had a dumb phone I was forever using it while walking, but since getting a smartphone the combination of a smaller font, the inability to type blind, and my usual mail program’s over-sensitivity to motion causing the screen to bounce at the slightest provocation means that I just cannot use it on the move at all!

Here’s a survey from goo Reseach with an interesting focus, terminals in western Japan, in particular those in Osaka, Hiroshima and Fukuoka.
Demographics
Between the 6th and 13th of August 2010 1,625 members of the goo Research monitor panel who lived either within 20 kilometres of the centre of Osaka, in Hiroshima City, or Fukuoka City completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 1,087 were from Osaka, 273 from Hiroshima, and 265 from Fukuoka, and in total 53.4% were female, 0.7% in their teens, 12.9% in their twenties, 34.2% in their thirties, 31.0% in their forties, and 21.2% aged fifty or older.
Depsite going to the Osaka area to shop once a month or so, the number of Asian tourists does not really register on me, perhaps because it’s more the Westerners that catch my eye!

Here’s a little bit of Japanese rail transport recent history I wasn’t aware of, uncovered in a survey by goo Research and reported on by japan.internet.com into railway station message boards. It appears that these blackboards could be used not just for official announcements, but also by the public for passing messages. Now, of course, the mobile phone has replaced the need.

Between the 12th and 16th of July 2010 1,051 members of the goo Research monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 52.3% of the sample were male, 16.6% in their teens, 18.6% in their twenties, 21.4% in their thirties, 16.0% in their forties, 15.5% in their fifties, and 12.0% aged sixty or older.
There’s no notice board in my station in an obvious place, although I think I remember seeing one when I had to go to the station office, but it is probably used for internal communication only. Here’s a sample board, with the message saying “A perv was here”, taken by Tomozo on flickr.
