Most ordinary salarymen see a pretty bleak future

Do you feel you have a future at your company? graph of japanese statisticsgoo Research recently reported on a survey conducted in association with President magazine, and looking at feeling worries and joy, with this excerpt below focusing more on the worry side of the equation…

Demographics

Over an unspecified period of time 2,168 members of the goo Research monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. All of the sample were in work, and the implication is that it was full-time work. The sample consisted of people between the ages of 20 and 59, but no further demographic breakdown was presented.

I’m afraid I’d probably have to put myself in to the “not really” or “not at all” categories for the questions below!

How business people use and study English

Where do you have opportunities to use English? graph of japanese statisticsgoo Research recently published the highlights of a survey they performed in conjunction with President magazine (hmm, I could very well buy that issue!) into the English-language ability of professional people.

Demographics

Detailed demographics were not given, but the sample consisted of 1,031 members of the goo Research online monitor group who were not necessarily readers of President. The sample was also limited to those between the ages of 30 and 59 who had not lived overseas but had taken a TOEIC exam. Note that a TOEIC score of 470 corresponds to reasonable ability with conversation and 730 to the beginning of decent proficiency in English.

It’s a bit difficult to draw many conclusions from this survey as having to use English in the workplace is going to naturally improve your English level, and with a number of companies having regulations that require a certain level of English to get promotion, and in an international business the higher-ups are going to have to need English to negotiate, so I think this survey is illustrating correlation, not causation.

Time management habits of the rich and poor

An interesting survey from goo Research, conducted in conjunction with President magazine, looked at time management, and this extract highlighted the differences in habits between the rich (over 15 million per year salary) and the average (between 4 and 5 million per year).

Demographics

There was little demographic information, just that there were 311 people in each of the two salary ranges, all of them business people.

I’m a “not at all” for four of them, and a “very much so” for Q4 if writing for the blog qualifies doing something productive while commuting

Mature Japanese couples’ lifestyles

Do you view your wife as a woman? graph of japanese statisticsToday is Health and Fitness Day in Japan, but as I don’t have any interesting sports-related surveys to hand, instead I’ll present a look by goo Research, in conjunction with President magazine, at married couples’ lifestyles.

Demographics

At some undefined point in time 3,208 married members of the goo Research monitor group aged between 40 and 69 completed a private internet-based questionnaire. The sample consisted of 1,602 husbands and 1,606 wives.

My wife does various internet-based questionnaires herself, and recently she showed me one user-generated poll asking a question to the effect of “What would you think if your spouse came up behind you and gave you a hug?” The most popular answers includes yelling, starting an argument, worrying that some bad news was coming, etc. Being happy about your spouse’s expression of love came very low down the list!
