Japanese’s most traumatic foreign horror films

The time for watching horror movies in Japan is not Halloween, but mid-summer, for the cooling effect of chills down one’s spine. However, this survey from goo Ranking looked at which foreign horror films people found traumatic.

Demographics

Between the 7th and 9th of July 2013 1,096 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 50.5% of the sample were female, 24.4% in their teens, 25.2% in their twenties, 24.8% in their thirties, and 25.6% in their forties; there was no-one older than 49 in this sample. Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample.

Note that the definition of “horror” is a bit loose – I wouldn’t class Psycho and Alien, for instance, as horror, and Sixth Sense was just awful.

Have any of my readers found Japanese horror movies traumatic? I’ve never actually watched any myself, but as for Western movies, Carrie was a bit traumatic for me.

Here is a picture of Japan’s most famous horror character, Sadako:

Beach FAILs

Today is the last day of my summer holidays, and although I didn’t go to the beach – indeed, I’ve never been to the beach in Japan – this survey from goo Ranking into slightly painful to behold women’s actions or behaviours one sees at the beach will perhaps be the last mention of summer on this blog for this year.

This rather painfully sad to behold scene came up when I did a Flickr search;

I did think of posting real women, but I’m uncomfortable with the privacy aspect and also with using cheesecake as a hit-gathering technique.

What people tend to get up to at summer music festivals

Following on from Disneyland, another big summer event is attending a festival. This ranking survey from goo Ranking looked at what sorts of things tend to happen at music festivals.

Here’s a bunch of Santa Clauses playing with balls from about the only Japan music festival I can name, Summersonic:

Flaming Lips At Summersonic (6)

I’ve never been to a music festival either in Japan or elsewhere, so I cannot comment much; all I know is that Glastonbury usually ends up as a mud bath.

Disneyland behaviours everyone ends up doing

It’s now the holiday week in Japan, and that means that Disneyland and Disney Sea will no doubt be packed to the gunwales with tourists. (That reminds me, I must find some statistics on the most popular tourist attractions in Japan!) So, this survey from goo Ranking looks at what people who go to Disneyland tend to end up doing.

Demographics

Between the 31st of May and 3rd of June 2013 1,069 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 50.1% of the sample were female, 24.8% in their teens, 24.9% in their twenties, 25.0% in their thirties, and 25.4% in their forties; there was no-one older than 49 in this sample. Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample.

Here’s someone doing a number 6, I suspect.

Tokyo Disneyland

Note that buying souvenirs (and other general Disney tat) features very heavily. Despite living 500 kilometers away from The Magic Kindgom, it seems, for instance, that almost every teenage schoolgirl I see has a Duffy bear doll hanging off their schoolbags.

And before you ask, no, I don’t know the difference between number 2 and number 7!

Painful to witness mutton dressed as lamb

goo Ranking did a nice pair of surveys recently, asking first what fashion when worn by over-thirty women can be painful to see, then giving over-thirty women their right to reply with what fashion items worn by us over-thirties can still look good.

For the second ranking, it was only women over thirty who answered, so I presume that implies that the first question was for everyone else bar them?

I have it on good authority that underneath the mask is a 56 year-old maid:

How to spot a female ex-Yankii in Japan

No, not a naturalised American woman, but a Yankii, to be polite, a juvenile delinquent, or to be more pointed, a chavette. goo Ranking indulged in a bit of stereotyping by asking people what behaviour from a woman would make you think she might be an ex-Yankii.

Archetypes of primary school love

goo Ranking’s survey for today is a look at what images people hold of common primary (elementary) school love.

Children

This is the sort of topic that I feel uncomfortable with. I don’t remember much from my primary school days, but girls never really featured as anything significant until perhaps the last year, yet watching the television in Japan they ask even kindergarten children about who they fancy in their class. Maybe I just came from a strange part of Scotland, or maybe I was as blissfully ignorant as I am today. Both these have a high probability of being true…

The kinds of people who cannot get married

goo Ranking recently published an interesting look at what sorts of people cannot get married, for both men looking at women and women looking at men. Note that the implication here is mostly regarding people who are actively dating, not those who aren’t interested in marriage.

Here’s a bit of an odd couple:

I’m not sure if it has anything to do with the survey, but I needed a photo to brighten up the page!

When one beer is not enough

The title of this article begs the question “Is there times when one beer is enough”, but for now please make do with goo Ranking’s look at moments when people feel one beer is just not enough.

Demographics

Between the 2nd and 5th of May 2013 1,088 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 50.2% of the sample were male, 23.3% in their teens, 24.4% in their twenties, 25.5% in their thirties, and 26.8% in their forties; there was no-one older than 49 in this sample. Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample.

I suppose for foreigners new to Japan, finding this nearby would be a moment when one was not enough?

Beer

I can most certainly identify with number 12, be it the free beer on an airplane or a few cans from the convenience store before getting on the train!

Off-putting characteristics of Japanese adults still living with their parents

goo Ranking performed a survey looking at what off-putting characteristics there are of single men and women still living with their parents.

I’m not really sure how to illustrate this – Japanese houses don’t tend to have basements for these characters to lurk in! A few years ago the buzzword parasite single was doing the rounds to describe people who particularly display characteristic number 2 below.
