When lack of English study is a problem on holiday

Here’s a short but sweet survey from goo Ranking, looking at when on holiday, at what moments do people wish they’d studied more English.

Demographics

Between the 21st and 23rd of June 2010 1,137 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 65.1% of the sample were female, 8.0% in their teens, 20.4% in their twenties, 31.2% in their thirties, 23.9% in their forties, 9.2% in their fifties, and 7.2% aged sixty or older. Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample.

Being a native English speaker, I of course have the benefit that any communications problems are caused by the other person not learning enough English, so just shouting a bit louder can solve all language problems.

Seriously though, in Japan I occasionally have the second problem, often as I adopt the English, not the Japanese pronunciation for certain words that should be understood by both of us. The most recent example I can think of was when I was asking if they had any Xylitol-based chewing gum, and given that I’m not even quite sure of how to say it in even in English, I had to get my Japanese wife to rescue me from the blank stares!

Twenty mysteries of Japanese men

I’m back after a two day layoff (for a rather interesting reason that I might blog about later!) with this rather difficult-to-translate for me survey by goo Ranking into what mysteries about Japanese men do women not understand.

Demographics

Over the 21st and 22nd of July 2010 1,159 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 63.4% of the sample were female, 12.4% in their teens, 21.1% in their twenties, 28.3% in their thirties, 23.6% in their forties, 8.2% in their fifties, and 6.4% aged sixty or older. Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample.

Number 2 is something I’ve never, ever heard of! Anyone have any more info about why being able to boil food is seen as an aspect of level-headedness?

Although most of the rest of the reported answers are pretty universal, I think, even as a man I don’t know many of the answers! My wife often mentions number one, but I keep trying to persuade her it’s just her perception.

Gachapin and Mukku top twenty trivia

A recent raking survey by goo Ranking looked at one of Japan’s favourite children’s characters, Gachapin and Mukku, Gachapin being the one who looks like Paul a green monster and Mukku the one who looks like John a red one.

Gachapin, mukku, Paul and John

Demographics

Over the 21st and 22nd of July 2010 1,159 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 63.4% of the sample were female, 12.4% in their teens, 21.1% in their twenties, 28.3% in their thirties, 23.6% in their forties, 8.2% in their fifties, and 6.4% aged sixty or older. Here’s the song mentioned in number 16, where they sing about eating children.

There’s also another bit of Gachapin and Mukku trivia I found while looking up the above video – they can speak English!

Summer quarrels with your partner

With a longer and hotter summer than usual in Japan, tempers inevitably fray, so goo Ranking took a look at what tends to be the cause of lovers’ tiffs in summer, for both men and women. However, looking at the answers there seems to be no pattern to which side starts the argument.

What most irritates me in summer (although it hasn’t started an argument, yet…) is my wife’s constant utterances of “it’s hot!” roughly every two minutes, even when inside air-conditioned facilities. Her cooler settings at bed time are also far too low, but I just snuggle up a bit more…

Skype most popular chat service in Japan

A recent survey from goo Research, reported on by japan.internet.com, into chat services found that more people were aware of, and used, internet telephone than instant messaging services.

Demographics

On the 5th of August 2010 1,069 members of the goo Research monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 53.7% of the sample were male, 17.0% in their teens, 17.5% in their twenties, 21.0% in their thirties, 16.4% in their forties, 16.0% in their fifties, and 12.2% aged sixty or older.

Back in March I translated identical questions from a different survey company. That time the sample was only 300 people, so one would expect this goo Research one to be more accurate, but even still it’s hard to explain why the last time the top four were MSN text, Yahoo! text, Skype voice and Skype text, but this time is a reversal with Skype voice, Skype text, Yahoo! text and MSN text.

Girlfriend beach FAIL

A bathing beauty from another eraFollowing on from last week’s boyfriend beach FAIL, goo Ranking published the other side of the story, what men do not want to see their girlfriends doing at the beach or in the pool.

Demographics

Between the 21st and 23rd of June 2010 1,137 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 65.1% of the sample were female, 8.0% in their teens, 20.4% in their twenties, 31.2% in their thirties, 23.9% in their forties, 9.2% in their fifties, and 7.2 aged sixty or older. Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample. In addition, this question was for males only.

I’m not really sure why her spirally body hair is such a problem, as it should have been covered by the option above. Furthermore, I’ve never really noticed any Japanese women with enough body hair to make it an issue.

And don’t ask me why doing the butterfly well is a problem for men!

Finally, not surprisingly showing off too much skin comes dead last.

The photo on the right is taken from Okinawa Soba’s excellent collection on flickr.

Boyfriend beach FAIL

goo Ranking had another fun summer survey, this time looking at what women do not want to see their boyfriends doing at the beach or in the pool.

Talking of ogling other women on the beach, here’s an advert for a mobile gaming site:

She tuts, “Damn – stolen”.

You might be a Twitter addict when…

Here’s a survey from goo Ranking that will probably hold true all over the world, I might be a Twitter addict if….

I don’t think I suffer from any of the below. Note that Tweeting in the bath is very much possible in Japan as many phones are waterproof, or at least splashproof.

Summer fashion FAILs of Japanese women

Having done male summer fashion FAILs, here we go with the follow-up from goo Ranking on what Japanese men think are women’s summer fashion FAILs.

Winter boots in summer in Japan

My fashion fail for women is wellies (sadly, no pics, only the above from gohsuket on flickr) – they seem relatively popular in both exceptionally loud patterns and boring old Barbour green, but in the hot weather they must be murder on the feet and a wonderful breeding ground for athlete’s foot, and of course with a short skirt they just look so unbalanced.

Furthermore, too many shoulder straps on show annoy me.

Ruining the mood at karaoke

A typical night at karaoke in Japan

goo Ranking recently took a look at a subject that was tempted to entitle “Karaoke FAIL”, but it didn’t quite fit, and anyway I have another FAIL coming later this evening. So, the survey was into what leaves people feeling down at karaoke.

I’ve not been to karaoke for ages and ages, but I’ve done my fair share of ruining the mood for others, judging by the list. Fiddling with the sound effects is one of my favourites, and in order to try to disguise my total inability to carry a tune I’ve occasionally done the speaking instead of singing.
