University FAILs

A lot of foreigners in Japan reacon that the whole Japanese university system is a big failure, but this survey looked at the things in people’s university life that they felt may have been a little failure.

Demographics

Between the 17th and 18th of January 2012 1,048 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 61.6% of the sample were female, 12.3% in their teens, 15.6% in their twenties, 27.9% in their thirties, 25.8% in their forties, 9.5% in their fifties, and 8.9% in their sixties. Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample.

It’s a bit sad that it takes until the very last entry to have something about the opposite sex! My only regret from university is that I imagined … no, that’s not really a regret (and rather embarrassing to take any further). Other than that, none really, I suppose, except that I wish I hadn’t been so naive, but as I still am, I suppose I’ll forever be naive!

Strange moe charms of the opposite sex

goo Ranking recently asked what aspects of the opposite sex that others might find a little odd did people find alluring, for both men looking at women and women looking at men.

At JR Osaka station there is a woman announcer voice that describes in English where to stand, and the “two” in “Please form two lines” is strangely alluring to me. The accent is mostly Japanese with very little US or UK English influence, but the “two” comes out in an accent that sounds very much like from my home area, a cute “tchew”. I also used to work with a Japanese woman who pronunced the Japanese “fu” sound rather sweetly.

Characteristics of boys’ school graduates

Having previously looked at rumours about girls’ schools, here we have goo Ranking looking at the characteristics of men educated in boys’ schools.

This survey was presumably for the women only.

Looking at the list, I must have gone to a boys’ school! Except for number 20, I hasten to add.

I don’t know much at all about Japanese boys school, although I do have a very strong image about British boys’ schools, which tend to be public boarding schools that foster a lot of number 4 in particular, if you catch my drift.

What causes rows with your partner on holiday?

goo Ranking took a look at causes of arguments when on holiday with one’s girlfriend or boyfriend.

Demographics

Between the 7th and 8th of February 2012 just over 1,000 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. Unfortunately, the link to the demographics is broken, so I cannot report the numbers in any detail. Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample.

I hope I’m training my wife to be more lackadaisical about travel plans! She does insist on making up a timetable of where to visit, but with recent holidays it’s become less and less detailed. However, on group tours she still gets annoyed with the staff, but I’m on holiday so it’s all water off a duck’s back to me. About the only real cause of arguments has been her getting exchange rates wrong by a factor of ten and doing a touch too much shopping…

What flaws stop Japanese finding a partner?

Here’s a fun survey from goo Ranking, looking at what flaws people think if they fixed they would be able to find a partner, for both women looking for a boyfriend and men looking for a girlfriend.

Thinking back to my own case, it was a combination of both having no self-confidence and not having the courage to make a move. There’s a few stories about that I could relate, but not in as public a venue as here! What managed to get me to overcome these flaws was getting my teeth fixed; I was still the same person afterwards, but perhaps I was more relaxed and less concerned about smiling afterwards?

Why can’t Japanese stay in love?

Here’s an interesting survey from goo Ranking, looking at the reasons why people cannot make relationships last, for both men and women.

“Wearing a cat on my head” is a wonderful metaphor that I’d never heard before – it reminds me of the book “The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat”, a book I read a long time ago but can heartily recommend. I’ve now looked up the phrase, and not suprisingly, I took the wrong meaning of the verb in the idiom 猫をかぶってしまう, neko wo kabutte shimau. There is an archaic meaning of “to be deceived”, so it would be the Japanese equivalent of “The cat hides his claws”, thus being hypocritical.

I’ll not give you my answers at they’d reveal more about me than I want you to know!

Mysteries of the Japanese woman

goo Ranking reported on a survey that looked at actions by females that leave males asking “Why?”. I have reported on the same question four years ago, if you wish to cross-reference.

I think everything on this list confuses me…

Useful smartphone features for overseas travel

goo Ranking recently looked at when a smartphone would be handy overseas.

Demographics

Between the 8th and 8th of February 2012 just over 1,000 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. Unfortunately, the link to the demographics is broken, so I cannot report the numbers in any detail.

Fortunately open wifi is far more common overseas than in Japan, so a smartphone can be used without worrying about roaming charges. Having just come back from overseas, the most convenient features were being able to check my docomo email via wifi and posting photos to Google+.

Japanese smartphone annoyances

I’m sure everyone’s had their moments when they wished to smash their smartphone into a thousand pieces, so this survey from goo Ranking looked at exactly that, what makes people annoyed with their smartphones.

Broken Blackberry

Number 3 is my pet hate with mine. My mail program gets slow and fails to respond switching between screens, so I end up getting a bunch of taps queued up and it pops in and out of edit mode. Number 7 is also annoying, as trying to view mail while walking (hmm, perhaps it’s a safety feature instead?) often results in the screen bouncing around. What are your pet hates?

What women regret on White Day

White Day, March 14th, is when men return a gift to women that they bought for them on Valentine’s Day. goo Ranking investigated what disappointments women have had with their gifts on White Day.

This survey was for the women only.

The wife has assured me that none of my White Day gifts have ever been disappointments. I should have asked her for that in writing.
