There comes a time in everyone’s life that keeping up appearances for the sake of the opposite sex becomes just too much bother, so goo Ranking took a look at when men and women felt their juices had stopped flowing.

Demographics

Over the 22nd and 23rd of January 2010 1,102 members of the goo Research monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 52.7% of the sample were female, 12.6% in their teens, 18.4% in their twenties, 27.9% in their thirties, 25.5% in their forties, 9.3% in their fifties, and 6.3% aged sixty or older. Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample.

The Japanese title of the survey is rather difficult to capture in English, so I’ve gone for a pun instead.

I’ve never been interested in 1 and 3 in the first place, so I don’t really know what that says about me!

goo Ranking’s silliness for today is a look at what women do in the hope of being considered cute and men do for coolness.

My attempts to look cool are limited to pulling a subtle wistful smile and appearing to be lost in thought trying to figure out the mysteries of the universe while all I’m actually doing is translating this silly survey. However, I’m probably giving more of an impression of being the train loony…

The 12= for men, paying by credit card all in one installment, refers to the standard credit card settlement method in Japan – for most cards you have to pay everything off at the end of the month, so if you want to spread the load you can ask to pay in multiple installments, so the store bills you once a month for the next few months. 11 for men, giving a coat to a crying girl, is a mystery to me, as is 24=, skiving off swimming lessons!

For men’s second choice, getting their woman to email once a day, I don’t know it that implies at least or at most once per day…

You’ll notice that for the men, the two answers at number six are contradictary, and 14= explains why she does 12 and 13!

The sticking a photo on a battery refers to the habit of getting photo seals from puri-kura machines.

My wishes would be to stop asking me to talk to her while she’s emailing and to properly use her unlimited plan or switch to another.

goo Ranking took a look at what secrets that if you heard about someone of the opposite sex that you liked, they’d go down in your opinion, for both men hearing about women and women hearing about men.

Just to explain a couple, a Yankee is basically a juvenile delinquent, a gal is a young girl with dyed blonde hair and far too much makeup, and a gal-man is, according to Google Images, a guy with well, just look at the fine specimens here.

“Gap moe” is a new term on me, but it seems to refer to a contradiction in exhibited characteristics that people find cutely attactive in the opposite sex. goo Ranking has a look at moments where people feel “gap moe”, with women on men’s gap moe and men on women’s gap moe.

Here’s my favourite kind of goo Ranking, those looking at the dark corners of inter-personal relationships in Japan, with this instance being of what you definitely cannot show to your lover, for both women not showing men and men not showing women, although looking at the answers I wonder if people were asked to answer from their school days?

I’m curious about the love letters people couldn’t send – why would that be? Too soppy, too racey, or just writing them like a diary and were never meant to be sent?

The new government in Japan seems to have been conducting an awful lot of surveys recently, with the latest one from the Cabinet Office Japan being on a gender-equal society. This survey was last conducted five years ago and translated three years ago.

Demographics

5,000 adults over the age of twenty were selected at random from all over the country, and an attempt was made to conduct face-to-face interviews with them over the period of the 1st to 18th of October 2009. 3,240 people, or 64,8%, were available and agreed to take part. 53.4% of the sample were female, 9.8% in their twenties, 14.6% in their thirties, 16.2% in their forties, 19.0% in their fifties, 22.2% in their sixties and 18.1% aged seventy or older. 48.5% were emploted, 9.9% self-employed, 3.7% in the family business, and 37.9% homemakers, studens, or retired. 74.6% were married, 0.7% were unmarried but living with their partner, 4.3% divorced, 5.7% widowed, and 14.8% unmarried. Finally, 77.6% had children.

Q10SQ is a bit of a strange set of answers to me, although perhaps it is just my intellectual thought processes that say exposure to those who don’t want to see it is not really the fault of the media on the whole. I would also put the objectification of women much higher up the ranking, but I don’t think there is the same degree of awareness in Japan as in the west.

Q1 is pretty depressing, but also pretty accurate, with school education being about the only thing that seems to be relatively balanced.

This set of surveys from goo Ranking looks at what people want from their partners for Christmas, men from their girlfriends and women from their boyfriends, and what people don’t want from their partners for Christmas, men from their girlfriends and women from their boyfriends.

I’ll stick with the number one choice, whatever. Judging by the huge preference amongst men for whatever, perhaps there is a sense that if they ask their partner for anything she will expect rather more in return, so by not specifying anything hopefully her expections for what she will receive will be lowered. That’s how I think, at least!

When I was single, I don’t think I ever got a mad desire to rush out and pair off with anyone, it was more just frustration then acceptance of my situation.
