It’s been a while since goo Ranking has published back-to-back a paired survey, so I am pleased to present what people in relationships make effort to do in order to prevent their partner getting bored with them, for both men and women.
Demographics
Over the 5th and 6th of September 2011 1,112 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 70.8% of the sample were female, 13.5% in their teens, 18.2% in their twenties, 28.1% in their thirties, 25.5% in their forties, 8.7% in their fifties, and 6.0% aged sixty or older. Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample.
When dating, I like to think that I did the first four for men.

Or indeed man, what symptoms are there? That was the question from goo Ranking, which was answered by both men and women.
Demographics
Between the 19th and 22nd of November 2010 1,171 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 50.2% of the sample were female, 11.3% in their teens, 19.1% in their twenties, 29.0% in their thirties, 23.4% in their forties, 9.6% in their fifties, and 7.6% aged sixty or older. Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample.
One obvious (perhaps “obvious” is not really the best word to use) symptom for men has probably been removed from their results on the grounds of taste, but if you recall the next line from the Dr Hook hit in the title, you will catch my drift. Anyway, on with the results!

Despite being the holidays, I cannot miss my Sunday entertainment for you all, so here goes with a goo Ranking survey looking at what kinds of love people yearned for when they were in high school, for both men and women.
Translating the list, I remembered the one I had, love with the trainee teacher – we once had a French teacher-in-training coming to visit our remote islands for a term of hands-on practise, which was nice. Other than that, I wasn’t really into all that nonsense when I was a lad.

Photo illustrating perhaps number three from the female list obtained from scion_cho on flickr.

Here’s an excellent survey from goo Ranking, looking at what words from your spouse light the blue touchpaper, for both what wives hear from their husbands and what husbands hear from their wives.
Demographics
Over the 21st and 22nd of October 2010 1,075 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 66.3% of the sample were female, 9.9% in their teens, 18.1% in their twenties, 30.9% in their thirties, 24.7% in their forties, 8.8% in their fifties, and 7.5% aged sixty or older. Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample.
If some of the comments don’t sound like argument starters, try reading them again in a sarcastic tone!
For me irritating my wife, it’s mostly if I say I’m tired, so she’s got me trained these days to realise I have to keep my mouth shut at these junctures.

Today’s bit of fun from goo Ranking is a look at what one might do if someone they fancied already had a boyfriend or girlfriend, for both men trying to steal women and women trying to steal men.
Demographics
Over the 23rd and 24th of August 2010 1,127 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 57.3% of the sample were female, 11.7% in their teens, 16.5% in their twenties, 29.0% in their thirties, 23.2% in their forties, 10.9% in their fifties, and 8.7% aged sixty or older. Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample.
I can speak from experience that for guys to do 1 or 2, and especially both 1 and 2, is the quickest way to convince her you’re gay, or at least completely and utterly herbivorous! Towards the bottom of both lists are techinques that seem pretty much guaranteed to start a fist fight or a cat fight, and as for the second last for men, I think some people have been watching far too many Hollywood romances! Finally, I’m most surprised to see that spreading rumours comes dead last in the women’s list.

Today’s survey from goo Ranking looked at the matter of what changes in one’s partner do people feel after a year of dating, for both men looking at their girlfriends and women looking at their boyfriends.
Demographics
Over the 21st and 22nd of July 2010 1,159 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 63.4% of the sample were female, 12.4% in their teens, 21.1% in their twenties, 28.3% in their thirties, 23.6% in their forties, 8.2% in their fifties, and 6.4% aged sixty or older. Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample.
It’s interesting that most of the events listed are rather negative. For me, I think all apply to the wife and me. However, it only took me two months to do number 4…

With a longer and hotter summer than usual in Japan, tempers inevitably fray, so goo Ranking took a look at what tends to be the cause of lovers’ tiffs in summer, for both men and women. However, looking at the answers there seems to be no pattern to which side starts the argument.
What most irritates me in summer (although it hasn’t started an argument, yet…) is my wife’s constant utterances of “it’s hot!” roughly every two minutes, even when inside air-conditioned facilities. Her cooler settings at bed time are also far too low, but I just snuggle up a bit more…

goo Ranking recently took a look at a question that seems simple at first glace, why did you decide to marry, for both men deciding and women deciding.
Demographics
Between the 23rd and 26th of April 2010 1,187 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-base questionnaire. 61.4% of the sample were female, 10.1% in their teens, 17.4% in their twenties, 30.9% in their thirties, 24.9% in their forties, 10.1% in their fifties, and 6.5% aged sixty or older. Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample. Only the men in the sample answered this question.
As a cultural note, “Because he’d/she’d decided to change jobs” implies more a posting within the company to a differnt town rather than actually changing employers, and more often than not these postings are effectively mandatory and at short notice.
As another cultural note, given the number of shotgun weddings in the country I’m surprised that that reason was so low in the ranking here!

goo Ranking takes us to a gokon dating party again, this time looking at what sort of person gets points against them on first meeting at a dating party, for both women looking at men and men looking at women.
Demographics
Between the 21st and 24th of May 2010 perhaps around 1,100 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. Unfortunately, the link to the demographics is broken, so I cannot give any more information that that right now. Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample.
Given that in Japan non-smoking restaurants are the exception rather than the rule, I’m surprised that smoking doesn’t rank way up near the top of the list, in particular smoking without asking if it is OK with everyone else.
For me, not laughing at gags would be a plus point, as the Japanese sense of humour as seen in visual comedy does absolutely nothing for me, on the whole.

This week’s silliness from goo Ranking is a look at what features of people of the opposite sex, even if you attended a dating party with them, would rule them out as a potential partner, for both men looking at women and women looking at men. I presume what the ranking is getting as is people who will never get past the “friend” stage to the “partner” level.
A dating party is my translation of the Japanese term gokon, a place where usually three to five guys and an equal number of girls go out together and see what happens. The respective male and female organisers are usually known to each other, but for the rest it’s usually a first meeting. The organisers usually bring along work colleagues to the event.
