Online shopping FAIL

Have you ever experienced an online shopping failure? graph of japanese statisticsThe title sounds perhaps as if Sunday has come a day early to the blog, but that was the best title I could think of for this recent survey by iBridge Research Plus and reported on by japan.internet.com into online shopping failures.

Demographics

On the 30th of March 2009 300 female members of the iBridge online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 20.3% of the sample were in their twenties, 41.0% in their thirties, 27.7% in their forties, 9.7% in their fifties, and 1.3% in their sixties.

The find of failure this survey was interested in was goods not quite matching the description on the page or accidentally buying the wrong thing, etc, not technical failures or fraud. Don’t ask me why almost one in five of the sample aren’t sure whether or not they failed!

White Day gift reception FAIL

Continuing my occasional theme of FAIL, this time it is a look at what White Day present-related regrets women have, courtesy as usual of goo Ranking.

Demographics

Between the 22nd and 26th of January 2009 1,071 members of the goo Research monitor group completed a private online questionnaire. 51.8% of the sample were male, 6.9% in their teens, 14.3% in their twenties, 28.9% in their thirties, 27.8% in their forties, 11.3% in their fifties, and 10.8% aged sixty or older. Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample. This question was for the women only.

In Japan, on Valentine’s Day women give men chocolates or other gifts, and on White Day, the 14th of March, men return the favour. This list of FAILs seem to be more from the obligatory gift-giving side, where women give male co-workers something on Valentine’s Day, then they return a no-strings-attached (in theory…) gift on White Day. The day is also an excuse for men to declare their secret infatuation, with answers like 7 and 8 coming from such experiences, one suspects.

Valentine’s Day received present FAIL!

Following up on my look at women’s Valentine gift-giving FAILs, here is goo Ranking again looking at what men were troubled by receiving on Valentine’s Day.

Demographics

Between the 18th and 22nd of December 2008 1,039 members of the goo Research monitor pool completed a private internet-based questionnaire. The reported sex split was exactly 50.00% male and 50.00% female, a figure that one will instantly see is wrong, so for the sake of argument I’ll round it up to 520 females and down to 519 males. 7.6% of the sample were in their teens, 15.6% in their twenties, 28.0% in their thirties, 27.6% in their forties, 10.9% in their fifties, and 10.3% aged sixty or older. Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample. Note also this question was for men only, as the day is mainly for women to give stuff to men.

Last year my female boss (I hope she doesn’t read my blog!) gave all the guys in the office a huge bar of Wonka chocolate which was a FAIL on a number of counts – too big, too sweet, and pretty disgusting, quite frankly. Wifey has never had a giving FAIL (I hope she is reading this!) and last year I got a cuddly toy and some Hello Kitty boxers.

Valentine’s Day FAIL!

It will soon be Valentine’s Day, so to get into the mood I present a short ranking survey from goo Ranking on failures commited on Valentine’s Day.

Note also this question was for women only, as the day is only for women to give stuff to men.

Note that there are two main types of chocolates to be passed – true love chocolates and obligatory chocolates. The latter mostly goes to workmates. More details can be found in a recently-translated serious survey from Macromill into Valentine’s day.

FAIL Japan!

It’s perhaps a meme (sorry for using that word; I dislike it, but it fits here) that has overstayed its welcome on the internet, with places like FAIL Blog documenting failure in pictures, or The Register with its slightly too swearie-word-filled Fail and You column, but it was the best way to headline this survey from goo Ranking on sensing that moment of defeat, to translate just a bit too literally.

Demographics

Between the 21th and 24th of October 2008 1,056 members of the goo Research online monitor panel completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 52.5% of the sample were female, 5.0% in their teens, 13.2% in their twenties, 28.4% in their thirties, 31.5% in their forties, 13.1% in their fifties, and 8.8% aged sixty or older. Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample.

My FAIL! moment that I often have is that once every two weeks is paper and metal rubbish day, the next or sometimes previous day is plastic and glass, so it’s going out to throw out stuff on the second day and realising that I’ve got the days back to front.
