Summer fashion FAILs of Japanese men

It’s been a while since I’ve had a FAIL post, so here goes with a look at what Japanese females think are men’s summer fashion FAILs.

Demographics

Between the 21st and 23rd of June 2010 1,137 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 65.1% of the sample were female, 8.0% in their teens, 20.4% in their twenties, 31.2% in their thirties, 23.9% in their forties, 9.2% in their fifties, and 7.2 aged sixty or older. Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample. In addition, this question was for females only.

I don’t do any of these fashion FAILs, but my pet FAIL are Crocs regardless of the season, and Jesus sandals annoy me for some reason. I’m not really sure about number 12, lots of silver – is silver supposed to be trendy in this weather?

Online shopping FAIL

It’s been a while since I’ve done a FAIL survey, so I’m sure you’ve all missed them. This time it was goo Ranking looking at internet shopping site FAILs.

Demographics

Between the 23rd and 25th of March 2010 1,128 members of the goo Research monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 50.5% of the sample were female, 15.1% in their teens, 16.9% in their twenties, 28.8% in their thirties, 21.1% in their forties, 9.4% in their fifties, and 8.7% aged sixty or older. Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample.

I don’t think I’ve had a failure shopping for a while, as it’s almost exclusively services or downloadable software I purchase. I did have a failure when I switched my domains to GoDaddy, then after a year they billed me for some useless directory service – I’ve since changed everything over to Namecheap.com who are, as the name suggests, cheap and, more importantly, do not try to upsell you at every opportunity. They also do domain anonymising at a very reasonable rate.

The wife buys some waffle cakes online occasionally, but I can’t help thinking that since a branch of the waffle shop is located at the next station down the line, we’d be cheaper buying from there.

Personal grooming FAIL

goo Ranking have another fun FAIL survey, this time looking at what personal grooming in the opposite sex takes you aback, for men looking at women and women looking at men.

Demographics

Between the 18th and 21st of December 2009 1,077 members of the goo Research monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 51.0% of the sample were female, 8.7% in their teens, 15.3% in their twenties, 27.0% in their thirties, 27.8% in their forties, 11.9% in their fifties, and 9.3% aged sixty or older. Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample.

New Year nengajo postcard FAIL

One of my New Year resolutions was to stop doing FAIL headlines, but it falls by the wayside with this look from goo Ranking at what things about New Year nengajo postcards give you that FAIL feeling.

Demographics

On the 19th of November 2009 1,166 members of the goo Research monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 59.9% of the sample were female, 13.4% in their teens, 20.6% in their twenties, 28.2% in their thirties, 23.2% in their forties, 8.3% in their fifties, and 6.3% aged sixty or older.

This is not FAILs on one’s own behalf, but the sinking feeling seeing the sender’s fail.

As my wife has a relatively common family name, but it is spelt with an uncommon combination of kanji characters, name mistakes are par for the course, although she does get a little annoyed if someone gets her given name wrong. I’ve once had the all blank card, and all my postcards this year were all print as I just didn’t feel like adding a few words extra. I also got the unknown postcard this year from (I think) an ex-colleague who I might have invited to my wedding, but I just couldn’t place a face to the name!

If I cared about him, I would have also had a feeling of disappointment when for the second year in a row when my boss sent my postcard to my old address, and even though they will often return incorrectly-addressed postcards before the New Year, he instead handed a card to me (and another person in the office) on the second day at work.

End of year (bonenkai) party FAIL

‘Tis the season where colleagues go out drinking to a 忘年会, bonenkai, the forget the year party, and at these times usually the most junior person in the office has the responsibility of organising the booze-up. So, goo Ranking decided to look at what failures and what trouble befell organisers.

Between the 23rd and 26th of October 2009 1,162 members of the goo Research monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 62.9% of the sample were female, 10.5% in their teens, 20.7% in their twenties, 30.8% in their thirties, 21.9% in their forties, 9.0% in their fifties, and 7.0% aged sixty or older.

Just in case you’re not familiar with these parties, they are basically compulsory, organised at a local low-end eating place with a two-hour plan of party trays at the table with free drink. The usual budget is 4,000 to 5,000 yen.

I cannot remember any particular failure from the organisers of parties I’ve attended, although there’s the usual trouble of no-one gathering at the required time and stragglers coming in halfway through.

Sophistication FAIL

Travel-time FAIL

Following up on beach date FAIL, we have another survey from goo Ranking looking at what people don’t want to see from their partners during travel, for both women discussing their men and men discussing their women.

My pet hate on holiday is my wife taking far too many photos or videos whenever we visit palaces and the like, photos and videos that we ourselves will never watch again let alone give to someone else. I don’t mind her pinching all the shampoo from the hotel room, but I do mind her rather obsessive behaviour that extends to hiding half-empty bottles so that we’ll get new bottles the next day…

From her point of view, it’s my lack of planning – I’m pretty easy-going when it comes to holidays, so having a schedule makes it seem just a bit too much like work. I don’t know why on earth sleeping with her mouth open figures in the male list!

Beach date FAIL

An all-too-short survey this time from goo Ranking, looking at what people don’t want to see from their partner on the beach or at the pool, for both women discussing their men and men discussing their women.

My brother recently posted a photo of himself to his blog which broke the vast majority of the rules, but to save you the anguish of having to witness that snap, instead here’s an extremely naff advert for extremely naff beachwear that appears far too often on Japanese television:

The music is by mihimaru GT, singing “Wake up and take my hand, you could have sentimental chickens”, or something like that. The person with the big hair is a professional idiot who goes by the stage name of Suzanne, and has a sister called Margarine.

Oh, and I guess the “strange sun-tanning” refers to getting a strapless tan.

Workplace BCC FAIL

Have you ever had a BCC fail at work? graph of japanese statisticsThis is not quite as entertaining a FAIL as yesterday’s post, but this report from japan.internet.com on a survey conducted by iBridge Research Plus into electronic mail focused at failures in the office with BCC, Blind Carbon Copy.

Demographics

On the first of May 2009 300 members of the iBridge monitor panel completed a private intenet-based questionnaire. 55.3% of the sample were male, 13.0% in their twenties, 35.7% in their thirties, 39.7% in their forties, 8.7% in their fifties, and 3.0% in their sixties.

I can’t recall ever making a mistake with BCC, a feature I rarely use anyway, but I have been on the receiving end of huge To lists that would have been better handled with BCC.

Now I look at the results, I don’t really know what they demonstrate…

Drunken FAILs of the Japanese

7.5% sleeping fail

Despite the suspicious-looking title and the dodgy picture, it’s not Sunday and a silly ranking, but a serious survey from iShare into alcohol consumption and indiscretions.

Demographics

Between the 24th and 30th of April 2009 398 mobile phone-using members of the CLUB BBQ free email forwarding service completed a private interent-based questionnaire. 51.8% of the sample were male, 39.4% in their twenties, 30.4% in their thirties, and 30.2% in their forties.

There’s so much interesting data here I hardly know where to start! In Q1SQ2 women rate themselves as stronger drinkers than men, although perhaps they are compaing themselves with other women rather than men? In Q1SQ5, it’s quite a surprisingly high number of people who’ve ended up on one-night-stands (or worse) due to alcohol.
