With 3D movies now becoming the norm, it seems, this detailed look at this subject of 3D movies by DIMSDRIVE Research reveals some interesting attitudes.
Demographics
Between the 20th of January and 4th of February 2010 8.596 members of the DIMSDRIVE monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 51.0% of the sample were male, 1.0% in their teens, 11.3% in their twenties, 32.9% in their thirties, 31.2% in their forties, 16.2% in their fifties, and 7.4% aged sixty or older.
I’ve now been to two 3D movies; first was Up, which would have been better in 2D, quite frankly, as I didn’t see what I was paying the extra 300 yen for, then it was Alice in Wonderland (note that this survey was conducted before the general release in Japan, and I’m surprised that peope claim to have seen it! Toy Story 3 similarly is still not out in Japan), which was a very good movie and was perhaps better in 3D, although the nose pain from the glasses makes me not really keen on going to see 3D movies if I can avoid it. For Alice, the only 2D English versions were either early morning or late at night, so 3D was unavoidable.

With more and more web sites supporting the use of icons to represent users (including this site and the Gravaters) in the comments, there is perhaps more opportunities to display an avatar, the subject of this survey from iShare.
Demographics
Between the 21st and 25th of December 2009 505 members of the CLUB BBQ free email forwarding service completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 56.2% of the sample were male, 38.8% in their twenties, 27.9% in their thirties, and 33.3% in their forties.
I’d have liked to have seen a question on whether people prefer to use an avatar that looks like them or just an actual photo. Looking at my Google Friend Connect (see the bottom of the right sidebar) set of icons, I see the vast majority are actual photos and there might be just one that is a look-alike image (), but since Japanese on the whole feel resistance to revealing names, one cannot make assumptions about Japanese avatar usage based on my primarily western set.
I’ve seen adverts somewhere for generating an avatar based on a photograph you send them, but I’ve not looked into the price.

japan.internet.com recently reported on a survey conducted towards the end of December by Cross Marketing Inc into the topic of online avatars. They interviewed 300 prescreened people from their monitor pool who were either very or a little familiar with, or had just heard of avatars. The sample was the usual for Cross Marketing equal split of males and females, and a fifth in each age category, from teens to those in their fifties.
Avatars are these wee icons or animated characters that represent one’s person in online spaces; I plan to set up a MyBlogLog community for my site so my visitors can see each other, or at least an idealised representation of themselves. I did plan to try out one or more of the services listed below in order to try to design a little electronic me, but they all seem to choke on Opera. At least that saves you from having to witness my hamfisted art skills…
