Just in time for the New Year, and perhaps as an alert to my male readers on how to avoid getting into their wife’s bad books, goo Ranking published a list of dissatisfactions with one’s husband that causes arguments to break out over New Year.

Demographics

The survey was conducted during the 31st of October and the 1st of November 2013, and 1,060 people completed a private web-based questionnaire. Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample. I would guess that only married women answered the survey, although the wording of the Japanese answers suggests that unmarried women could imagine which answers might apply to them in the future or to other couples, or even their parents.

This rather unappetising-looking fish is actually rather auspicious; me failing to avoid turning up my nose at some of the traditional Japanese New Year offering is perhaps the most common reason previously for arguments!

So far this year end I don’t think I’ve committed any of these flaws, although I am currently skating on thin ice regarding my procrastination of tidying up the garden!

With a longer and hotter summer than usual in Japan, tempers inevitably fray, so goo Ranking took a look at what tends to be the cause of lovers’ tiffs in summer, for both men and women. However, looking at the answers there seems to be no pattern to which side starts the argument.

Demographics

Over the 21st and 22nd of July 2010 1,159 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 63.4% of the sample were female, 12.4% in their teens, 21.1% in their twenties, 28.3% in their thirties, 23.6% in their forties, 8.2% in their fifties, and 6.4% aged sixty or older. Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample.

What most irritates me in summer (although it hasn’t started an argument, yet…) is my wife’s constant utterances of “it’s hot!” roughly every two minutes, even when inside air-conditioned facilities. Her cooler settings at bed time are also far too low, but I just snuggle up a bit more…

This interesting survey from iShare took a look at outcome of arguments, which revealed the rather unbelievable statistic of more women than men apologising…

Between the 5th and 10th of March 2010 509 members of the CLUB BBQ free email forwarding service completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 55.0% of the sample were male, 31.8% in their twenties, 32.6% in their thirties, and 35.6% in their forties.

Although Q1 and Q2 don’t directly specify who people are arguing with in private, one can assume that one’s partner is often the other combatant, although as mentioned above, the number of women self-reporting that they apologise seems rather high. However, Q2SQ balances it out with nearly twice as many men indicating that apologies don’t always calm the other side down.
