My adverts are invisible to many Japanese

Have you ever bought goods, services through contextual ads? graph of japanese statisticsAnd they’re also invisible to many of you lot, judging by my data! I mention this as today’s survey is from goo Research, reported on by japan.internet.com, into internet advertisements, with this report focusing on the contextual kind.

Demographics

Between the 17th and 20th of August 2010 1,074 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 52.7% of the sample were male, 17.2% in their teens, 18.0% in their twenties, 21.4% in their thirties, 16.5% in their forties, and 26.9% aged fifty or older.

I personally think that most the people who say they haven’t see any contextual adverts in blogs on rews stories are mistaken – many popular news sites run adverts not just in the sidebars, but also have blocks right in the middle of stories, and I feel confident in saying that far less than 30% of the sample are running ad blockers.

Clicking on AdSense in search results page

Up to about how many pages of search results do you view? graph of japanese opinionjapan.internet.com, in conjunction with goo Research, published the results of a survey carried out in the middle of June into advertisements in search results. This was part of a bigger survey on search engines in general, but sadly the results are not available to the general public. They interviewed 1,031 members of their monitor panel by means of a private internet-based questionnaire. 55.8% of the respondents were female, with 23.9% of the total sample in their twenties, 40.8% in their thirties, 25.8% in their forties, 8.0% in their fiftiesm and 2.0% in their sixties.

One very suprising result is that MSN has a mere 3.7% market share as a primary search engine. Given that MSN is the default page for Internet Explorer in most new installs of Windows, this indicates perhaps a serious level of dissatisfaction with MSN overcoming user inertia.

Another surprise is over two-thirds of users go at least three pages deep into search results. However, the question is not phrased explicitly to find out the maximum or the average, but I feel the answers given indicate the average limit of the user’s patience. I don’t know if this result indicates if people are bad at formulating queries or the search results are usually pretty poor.

Irregular blog status update

I’m having a rest from translation today, so instead I’ll post a few interesting stats of my own. Google AdSense last month earned enough beer money for one 500 ml can of Asahi Super Dry at vending machine prices, and at this rate it will be sometime in the summer of 2008 when I actually break the $100 minimum payout balance! I passed 2,000 visitors yesterday, averaging about 40 or so per day, but much of that is through BlogExplosion. However, about 20% of my hits are from other sources, which is nice. I’m the 53th most authoratitive blog on Japan, according to Technorati. Got a Page Rank of Search Engine Optimization, but still languishing on page 10 of Google when searching for my blog title, but people still get here from Google searches that suggest my nearest Google cached index is wonky, or something – I’m fourth on page 10 from home, but eighth from work. I surprise myself with some of the statistics I translate, like the dekichatta kekkon stuff yesterday. Must add the Google section targetting stuff to get my sidebar ignored and blog entry highlighted to hopefully reduce the number of rather useless blog-related ads that appear. Shiron is ticking along nicely too, with people picking up articles from both places. Nonsense feels more popular than facts, however. I’d love to buy a domain name and dedicated host, but I need a decent recommendation and a good excuse to part with the money!

UPDATE: Got a link to one of my articles from the Lost Budgie – thanks! My first proper inbound link that I didn’t have to ask for!
