Deflation affecting Japanese cinemas too

Do you support cutting cinema ticket prices to 1,500 yen? graph of japanese statisticsWith one of the biggest cinema chains in Japan, Toho Cinemas, announcing that from next month (March 2011) they will cut the price of an adult ticket from 1,800 yen to 1,500 yen, iShare decided it would be a good time to conduct a survey to see what people thought about multiplex ticket prices.

Demographics

Between the 21st and 24th of January 2011 a mere 284 members of the CLUB BBQ free email forwarding service completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 53.5% of the sample were female, 32.0% in their twenties, 32.4% in their thirties, and 35.6% in their forties. All had watched a movie at a multi-screen theatre, although it would have been useful to see the percentage of people who had been to the cinema.

As I always say, if you’re regularly paying 1,800 yen for the cinema you’d doing it wrong! The first of the month is 1,000 yen, Toho Cinemas have a loyalty card that gives you one free for every six watched, late shows are 1,200 yen or so, advance tickets are usually 1,300 yen, and ticket shops around cinemas often have left-over advance tickets on sale or other discount passes.

I’d like to see them do something about 3D surcharges; Toho Cinemas started off charging 300 yen extra, but last autumn they bumped it up to 400 yen. I’d watch more 3D (actually, I’ve given up now) if it was just 200 yen, or my loyalty card gave me a discount, or if I could buy my own pair.

My next movie will be The King’s Speech, and although I’d be prepared to pay full price for it, I’ll be going on March 1st, 1,000 yen day.

Hayfever affects one in three in Japan

Do you get hayfever? graph of japanese statisticsAt least according on this recent survey from iShare into hayfever, their second survey this season; actually, this survey is the second half of the first one, as the demographics and survey dates are identical.

Demographics

Between the 17th and 20th of December 2010 2,766 members of the CLUB BBQ free email forwarding service completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 56.6% of the sample were male, 14.6% in their twenties, 37.3% in their thirties, and 48.1% in their forties.

The last two seasons towards the end of April things have got too much for me and I’ve had to resort to visiting a local ENT clinic. The anti-histamines always knock me out, so I ask not to get the prescribed, but the other two I get to turn off the taps work well and get me through the last few weeks of the season.

Spotting a Valentine’s Day failure

Following on from Sunday’s look at women’s Valentine’s Day failures, here’s goo Ranking again looking at the distinguishing features of loser men on Valentine’s Day. Yes, the original Japanese title was as harsh as that!

Demographics

Over the 20th and 21st of December 2010 1,128 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 65.4% of the sample were female, 11.9% in their teens, 17.2% in their twenties, 30.2% in their thirties, 23.2% in their forties, 10.0% in their fifties, and 7.4% aged sixty or older. Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample.

I haven’t the slightest idea what number seven is all about! I couldn’t really make sense of the Japanese; it must be some strange ritual?

For me, it would have been singing ditties by The Smiths all day.

Battery dissatisfaction high amongst smartphone users

How satisfied are you with your smartphone's battery life? graph of japanese statisticsAccording to Japan’s biggest comparison shopping site, kakaku.com, battery life is the one point where most smartphones fail badly. To try to quantify this, goo Research conducted a survey, reported on by japan.internet.com, into smartphone batteries.

Demographics

Between the 2nd and 7th of February 2011 1,081 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 53.4% of the sample were male, 16.6% in their teens, 18.3% in their twenties, 21.5% in their thirties, 16.1% in their forties, 15.4% in their fifties, and 12.1% aged sixty or older.

I was completely dissatisfied with my old mobile phone’s battery, but after recently trading up to another standard feature phone I’m more than impressed by the one week recharge cycle, involving much email, less than a minute of calls, and a little bit of surfing here and there.

Eco Car purchasing in Japan

Do you have an Eco Car in the family? graph of japanese statisticsWith the termination of the Eco Car subsidy being largely responsible for the recently-announced 1.1% drop in Japan’s GDP for the previous quarter, this seems a good time to look at how the public perceived the scheme through the results of a survey from DIMSDRIVE Research.

Demographics

Between the 21st of October and the 5th of November 2010 7,681 members of the DIMSDRIVE monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 52.9% of the sample were male, 0.7% in their teens, 10.6% in their twenties, 29.9% in their thirties, 32,5% in their forties, 17.6% in their fifties, and 8.7% in their sixties.

From an economic standpoint, the Eco Car scheme was good for opening wallets and getting money circulating, the biggest issue these days in the Japanese economy. From an environmental standpoint, however, a lot of cars were upgraded earlier that they needed be, the life and recycling of the batteries in hybrids is still an open question, and due to the way the scheme was structured, a lot of cars were not really that ecologically sound. A good diesel, such as on a Volkswagen, can outrun most other cars, although diesel does not have a good image in Japan.

mixi top SNS, Twitter top blogging service in Japan

How do you use video sharing services? graph of japanese statisticsThe results from this recent survey from goo Research and reported on by japan.internet.com into online services may not be too reliable for SNS as number two and number three in the list, GREE and Mobage Town, are both mobile phone-based social gaming sites and I feel that the demographic they appeal to differs significantly from the more PC-oriented goo monitor group. I have no data to back up this, so take it with an appropriately-sized pinch of salt.

Demographics

Over the 25th and 26th of January 2010 1,102 members of the goo Research online monitor panel completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 52.8% of the sample were male, 16.5% in their teens, 18.5% in their twenties, 20.9% in their thirties, 15.9% in their forties, 15.6% in their fifties and 12.6% aged sixty or older.

I’m on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and even have uploaded a couple of videos to YouTube.

Japanese juvenile delinquency

How has serious juvenile crime changed in the last five years? graph of japanese statisticsThis is a survey I wanted to split into two parts, but it didn’t really lend itself to it, so instead here is a big survey from the Cabinet Office Japan into juvenile delinquency.

Demographics

Between the 25th of November and the 5th of December 2010 3,000 members of the general public selected at random from resident registers were approached for face-to-face interviews. 1,886 people, or 62.9% of the sample, agreed to do so. 54.5% of the sample were female, 9.9% in their twenties, 16.3% in their thirties, 16.1% in their forties, 16.4% in their fifties, 22.1% in their sixties, and 19.1% aged seventy or older.

I must admit to not having seen much in the way of delinquency. I don’t think kids hanging out outside convenience stores really is an issue, and although I occasionally hear noisy motorcycle gangs, I don’t associate it with delinquency, just criminality and ineffective policing.

Worst jobs to have hayfever at

Here’s a little bit of a silly spacefiller from iShare, looking at hayfever, a survey that seems to be the first in a series, but how often they will be carrying it out, it doesn’t say, but given that the survey was conducted in December, I hope they have a monthly report.

This year (actually, it seems to be every year we get a similar prediction) the ceder pollen, the most common one for causing allergies in Japan, is supposed to be five times the average. It took me about five years to get hayfever in Japan – I also have rapeseed allergy, but there’s none in Japan – but on the positive side, I used to have awful mosquito allergy and would get huge swollen arms, but that’s gone away. On the other hand, it could have been a bedbug allergy as it went away as soon as I got married…

This latest set of results from the eighth regular survey into mobile devices looked in particular at smartphones, but also exanded on a wish I had, breaking out numbers for the iPod touch and iPad.

Demographics

Between the 24th and 27th of January 2011 1,069 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 52.9% of the sample were male, 15.9% in their teens, 18.1% in their twenties, 21.5% in their thirties, 16.1% in their forties, and 28.4% aged fifty or older.

Note that in Q1SQ1 GALAPAGOS is Sharp’s brand name for their Android-based handsets (and electronic book readers), although some of their Android devices for au are branded with the IS series mark.
