What your Japanese girlfriend should quit before marriage

It’s Sunday, so it must be silly goo Ranking time! This time we look at what behaviour people can (or would, or did) put up with from a partner when they are going out together, but want them to stop doing once they marry, for both men putting up with women and women putting up with men.

Demographics

Between the 21st and 25th of May 2009 1,082 members of the goo Research monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 51.4% of the sample were male, 7.3% were in their teens, 16.0% in their twenties, 28.1% in their thirties, 27.9% in their forties, 10.8% in their fifties, and 9.9% aged sixty or older. Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample. Note that this survey was for the 556 men only.

Call me old-fashioned, but being unfaithful or staying out overnight without letting me know is a great big sign, regardless of how wonderful she might be with me, that things aren’t going to last, and hoping that she’ll stop is just fulling myself.

This reminds me of a survey from two years ago on marriage deal-breakers that you might want to cross-reference with!

Most Japanese cinema-goers pay full price

Where do you more often watch movies, at a cinema or at home? graph of japanese statisticsOne of the top two complaints I hear from other foreigners in Japan is the rather high 1,800 yen (US$19 or UK¤12 or so) per seat, but this survey from RealWorld RealResearch and reported on by japan.internet.com into movies found few taking advantage of discounts.

Demographics

Over the 25th and 26th of June 2009 1,017 members of the RealWorld RealResearch (I never tire of typing the company’s name!) monitor group completed a private online questionnaire. 57.9% of the sample were male, 11.5% in their teens, 12.9% in their twenties, 26.5% in their thirties, 15.9% in their forties, 12.3% in their fifties, and 20.8% aged sixty or above.

When I say most people pay full price, the full price is not necessarily 1,800 yen. The first of the month is usually 1,000 yen, one day a week is Ladies’ Day with 1,000 yen for females, and late shows (from 9 pm usually) are often discounted by 300 or 500 yen. However, I usually buy advance tickets; these are normally 1,300 yen, and if you buy from the cinema or convenience stores they often come with a free gift. The third party ticket shops mentioned below usually stock unsold advance tickets or cheap daytime passes, but I find them not worth the bother.

If you go to Toho group cinemas frequently, I also strongly recommend the Toho Cine Mileage card; their credit card version is free, and for every six movies you see you get one free!

Surprising mobile video consumption patterns in Japan

Have you ever watched video on your mobile phone? graph of japanese statisticsLooking at this survey from goo Research and reported on by japan.internet.com into mobile phones, with this particular report focusing on video content, I find it quite surprising that downloaded content is almost as popular as the free over-the-air television broadcasts, and that content converted to mobile format is also not that uncommon.

Demographics

Between the 3rd and 7th of July 2009 1,065 members of the goo Research monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 53.4% of the sample were male, 16.5% in their teens, 18.2% in their twenties, 20.9% in their thirties, 16.3% in their forties, 15.6% in their fifties, and 12.4% aged sixty or older.

It is very curious that 16.3% do not have a mobile phone – the usual percentage is around 5%. Has goo Research recently changed the demographic balance of their monitor panel?

My biggest surprise was from Q2SQ2, in that just 15% said they watched while commuting, and even less at other times on the move. I have heard that it is seen as a little embarrassing to be watching TV on the train for some people, but I’d like to see a more detailed survey on that. Indeed, it has been quite a while since I’ve translated a survey on in-train activities.

Japanese girls love big mechs too

Following on from yesterday’s look at Neon Genesis Evangelion, lets look today with iShare again at big mech anime, or cartoons of giant robots knocking lumps out of each other for those not familiar with the technical terms.

Demographics

Between the 11th and 16th of June 2009 600 members of the CLUB BBQ free email forwarding service completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 56.7% of the sample were male, 35.8% in their twenties, 29.5% in their thirties, and 34.7% in their forties.

I’m not sure what Atom Boy is doing in Q1SQ2, and if he is included, why not Doraemon too?

A Gundam robot in Tokyo is one of the capital’s attempts to sway the Olympic committee into picking Japan for 2016. Here’s a video of it in action:

Neon Genesis Evangelion liked by many Japanese

Do you like Neon Genesis Evangelion? graph of japanese statisticsA popular anime, so I believe, is the subject of a recent survey from iShare on Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Demographics

Betwen the 29th of June and 2nd of July 2009 544 members of the CLUB BBQ free email forwarding service completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 53.3% of the sample were male, 37.3% were in their twenties, 28.7% in their thirties, and 34.0% in their forties.

I find it interesting in Q1 and Q2 that women seem just as interested as men in Evangelion and associated items, although I feel that the female members in CLUB BBQ surveys are often quite geeky. In Q3, the new movie, Rebuild of Evangelion, was released to cinemas on the 27th June 2009, apparently.

I must admit to being perhaps in a rather small minority of English-speaking foreigners in Japan, those who just don’t really like anime for anime’s sake. My consumption in Japan is limited to Chibi Maruko-chan and the occasional Ghibli movie, but apart from that I don’t have any urge to watch it. I did once try to sit through Akira (or was it Ghost in the Shell?) but only got about 20 minutes in.

Twitter awareness 16%, usage 2.3% in Japan

Have you ever used Twitter? graph of japanese statisticsDespite having over 300 followers (I’m shocked, not boasting about it!) I still don’t really see the point, as do most Japanese, according to this survey from iBridge Research Plus and reported on by japan.internet.com into Twitter.

Demographics

On the 6th of July 2009 300 members of the iBridge monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 50.3% of the sample were female, 19.0% in their twenties, 39.0% in their thirties, 26.7% in their forties, 10.7% in their fifties, and 4.7% in their sixties.

I did once try Twitter from my Japanese mobile but it was through a bit of a dodgy web page script. Searching around the Japanese web I have come across an interesting site, in Japanese, of course; the using Twitter from a mobile phone Wiki, which includes a section with a number of iAppli for docomo applications that can be used to access Twitter. I should download a couple and review them!

Other surveys on Twitter may be found by following that link.

Home robots wanted by most Japanese women

As the average Japanese man does just the least amount of housework amongst the developed nations, perhaps that is one reason that this survey from iBridge Research Plus and reported on by japan.internet.com found that robotic home appliances were viewed favourably by many Japanese women.

Demographics

On the 29th of June 2009 300 female members of the iBridge monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 19.3% of the sample were in their twenties, 38.3% in their thirties, 26.7% in their forties, 11.7% in their fifties, and 4.0% in their sixties.

Q1SQ1 asked about “domestic appliance robots” and “Robotic domestic appliances”; I think the difference that this is trying to highlight is a general purpose robotic helper (your very own personal ASIMO) versus a single-purpose item with autonomic actions, such as the Roomba cleaner.

Women getting out of the wrong side of the bed

A ladder on a ladder

goo Ranking recently took a look at what bit of bad luck puts a downer on the whole day, this time for women. Follow the link to catch the male version of the survey.

Note that this survey was for the 526 women only.

Surprisingly, the mistaken gas emissions features in the female list too. I can’t say I’ve ever actually noticed anyone passing gas on the train, and anyway bad breath is far worse and much longer-lasting than a momentary methane leak. Indeed, that would probably be right up the top of my list, having someone with the fragrant scent of ciggies, natto and peridontitis sitting beside me.

Mouth-watering Japanese television advertisements

Looking at the date of this survey, I don’t know why it suddenly popped up in my news feeds this week, but since I seem to have missed it the first time around, I’ll present it regardless. The survey was iShare taking a look at television advertisements that make one hungry and want to buy the food item.

Demographics

Between the 10th and 16th of February 2009 475 members of the CLUB BBQ free email forwarding service who had a mobile phone completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 55.2% of the sample were male, 10.9% in their twenties, 48.0% in their thirties, 32.8% in their forties, and 8.2% in their teens or fifty or older.

Note that the questions were not about a specific company’s product, but about any for the given category – I just selected a representative advertisement to illustrate the story.

One in four Japanese never clean their mice

About how often do you clean your computer's mouse? graph of japanese statisticsHere’s an interesting little survey from Marsh Inc and reported on by japan.internet.com into computer maintenance, looking in particular at cleaning one’s PC and accessories.

Demographics

Between the 2nd and 5th of July 2009 300 members of the Marsh monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. The sample was exactly 50:50 male and female, 1.3% were in their teens, 18.7% in their twenties, 20.0% in their thirties, 20.0% in their forties, 20.0% in their fifties, and 20.0% aged sixty or older.

I think the survey is looking at home computers, although there is no clear statement in the article to say that it is.

I must admit to only cleaning my PC once a year, although about once a month I do clean the fluff off the bottom of the mouse.
