The title of this article begs the question “Is there times when one beer is enough”, but for now please make do with goo Ranking’s look at moments when people feel one beer is just not enough.
Demographics
Between the 2nd and 5th of May 2013 1,088 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 50.2% of the sample were male, 23.3% in their teens, 24.4% in their twenties, 25.5% in their thirties, and 26.8% in their forties; there was no-one older than 49 in this sample. Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample.
I suppose for foreigners new to Japan, finding this nearby would be a moment when one was not enough?

I can most certainly identify with number 12, be it the free beer on an airplane or a few cans from the convenience store before getting on the train!

goo Ranking performed a survey looking at what off-putting characteristics there are of single men and women still living with their parents.

I’m not really sure how to illustrate this – Japanese houses don’t tend to have basements for these characters to lurk in! A few years ago the buzzword parasite single was doing the rounds to describe people who particularly display characteristic number 2 below.

goo Ranking asked their panellers what behaviours by their date at the movies would ruin the mood.

Looking at number 9=, it would seem to be relatively acceptable to fall asleep for a little bit… Funnily enough, even though I go to the cinema about once every two months and am often rather tired, I’ve never actually fallen asleep, even at times when I wanted to. I can however manage to fall asleep at live musical theatre where I’ve paid much more money for a seat that is usually less comfortable than the average cinema one.

goo Ranking had an interesting survey on stereotypes of single people in their thirties and looking for love, for both women and men. Note that this time both sexes voted in both the surveys.

As someone who was single for half my thirties, I can identify with a lot of them, in particular number 19 for the guys, which was one that did actually come true!

After doing a nice positive look at Father’s Day, I’ll have to balance it out with a look by goo Ranking at useless husbands, specifically household tasks that wives are astonished by their husband’s inability to do.
Only the women in the sample were asked this question, and presumably only married women.
Out of the list, I do pretty much all of the list, although I’m not sure I could work the washing machine!

With today being Father’s Day in Japan, I present an appropriate survey from goo Ranking looking at what presents Japanese men would be happy to receive on Father’s Day.
Demographics
Over the 4th and 5th of April 2013 1,101 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 50.6% of the sample were male, 23.3% in their teens, 25.2% in their twenties, 25.5% in their thirties, and 26.1% in their forties; there was no-one older than 49 in this sample. Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample.
Here’s a picture of number 22, a presentation six-pack of beer featuring a famous character from some businessman manga that I cannot quite recall the title of:

I’m not sure of the exact context of the question; goo Ranking tends to be multiple choice, so I suspect there might be an element of fathers not wanting to break the family budget by wishing for too much, or perhaps presents that are child pocket-money sized.

For a change, a relatively postive and normal survey from goo Ranking, looking at surprising places people have been taken to on dates, for bother guys being taken along by girls and girls been taken along by guys.
Here’s a date, it appears, at a game arcade (or game centre, as they are called in Japan):

I went to them quite a bit while dating, in particular to play the crane games for cuddly toys!
I also don’t find the herb garden too surprising myself – I in fact proposed at one! I’m trying to work out, though, why people would take someone on a date to their school – I think the wording implies after graduation; I suppose if it was a university there may be something interesting to see on campus, but just a plain school..?

I really should find more cheery topics for Sundays, but perhaps more cheery might imply less interesting? Today’s blues from goo Ranking was the moments that people think “My marriageable age has passed!”, for both women and men.
Looking at the male list as one who got married a bit later in life (aged 36), I can certainly identify with number one and the second number five.
Searching flickr for an appropriate photo produced the photo above, the best of a rather eclectic selection!

goo Ranking had a pair of surveys looking at what declarations by men about themselves make women lose all romantic interest in them, and vice-versa.
This seems to be quite an odd list, and I don’t think I’ve ever been in a situation where someone has said something that has put me right off them! I’m also not really sure why either having bought a flat or having money in the stock market is a problem.

goo Ranking published quite an entertaining pair of surveys, looking at what casual words from female friends hurt men and what casual words from male friends hurt women.

Number 3 I get quite a bit, but I put it down to either my bad Japanese or funny accent… To be honest, I’ve probably heard most of the list at one time or another…
