Irritating girls to go along with on group dates

One traditional form of finding a member of the opposite sex is the group dating party thing, or the 合コン, go-kon in Japanese, where a group of usually three of four guys and girls go out and things may or may not develop. Following on from their look at male irritations goo Ranking took a look at what sort of activities from fellow girls at go-kons irritate them.

Demographics

Between the 21st and 24th of July 2009 1,026 members of the goo Research monitor group completed a private online questionnaire. 48.2% of the sample were male, 8.0% in their teens, 14.6% in their twenties, 28.8% in their thirties, 26.0% in their forties, 12.5% in their fifties, and 10.1% aged sixty or older. Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample.

Hmm, the translation for number 13 was unlucky for me and makes no sense! I would welcome a better translation.

Favourite fetishes of Japanese men

Zettai Ryoiku - Absolute Area cellphone strapHere’s a survey that I really should have illustrated with some pictures, but digging around Google in Japanese almost every match I got was definitely not safe for work! Hopefully text only will pass any filters you might have in the office that could potentially block this survey from goo Ranking looking at men’s fetishes, in particular fetishes men would be less eager to talk about.

Note that today’s question is for the men only, but the same question has been posed to the women.

Number 2, athletic thighs, is quite a rarity in Japan amongst young women, as usually it is the anorexic look that is in. I’m not really quite sure about wide foreheads, though…

Partner’s stinginess that leaves you cold

I decided to give the FAIL keyword a miss on the headline this time for a survey from goo Ranking looking at one’s partner’s stingy behaviour that leaves you cold, for both men looking at women’s stinginess and women looking at men’s stinginess.

Even when we were dating, I suppose I was guilty of just about all the penny-pinchings listed by the women below! I do remember the first time we stayed overnight in a hotel, when it came to paying the bill I expected her to pay half – maybe it’s differences in perception, but not going Dutch by default when dating is always a bit strange to me.

I’ve been to a go-kon exactly once, organised by a colleague from the guys side and a female friend of his from another division of the company. Six of us went out for a meal, and absolutely nothing happened, mostly because the other five were just as socially inept as me.

Note that as suggested by answer 15, people in relationships, even some married people, go along to these parties for innocent reasons such as making up the numbers.

Travel-time FAIL

Following up on beach date FAIL, we have another survey from goo Ranking looking at what people don’t want to see from their partners during travel, for both women discussing their men and men discussing their women.

Demographics

Between the 22nd and 24th of June 2009 1,180 members of the goo Research monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 58.6% of the sample were female, 10.3% were in their teens, 22.9% in their twenties, 31.5% in their thirties, 19.2% in their forties, 9.6% in their fifties, and 6.4% aged sixty or older. Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample.

My pet hate on holiday is my wife taking far too many photos or videos whenever we visit palaces and the like, photos and videos that we ourselves will never watch again let alone give to someone else. I don’t mind her pinching all the shampoo from the hotel room, but I do mind her rather obsessive behaviour that extends to hiding half-empty bottles so that we’ll get new bottles the next day…

From her point of view, it’s my lack of planning – I’m pretty easy-going when it comes to holidays, so having a schedule makes it seem just a bit too much like work. I don’t know why on earth sleeping with her mouth open figures in the male list!

Ask What Japan Thinks: Salarymen’s pocket money and their wives’ secretly skimmed spending

On my recent post on buttering up your Japanese wife I had a question from Galerius about pocket money, so I decided to look up about how much Japanese men get each month. In two in three married couples it is the wife who controls the family budget (see Q8) and she gives her husband an allowance each month to cover his lunch, after-work drinking and other incidental expenses. So, I found a pair of surveys, one on how much pocket money fathers get, and another on how much of the family budget women secretly skim off to spend on themselves.

Demographics

For the women, between the 22nd and 24th of June 2009 1,180 members of the goo Research monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 58.6% of the sample were female, 10.3% were in their teens, 22.9% in their twenties, 31.5% in their thirties, 19.2% in their forties, 9.6% in their fifties, and 6.4% aged sixty or older.

For the men, between the 23rd and 25th of March 2009 1,043 members of the goo Research monitor group completed a private online questionnaire. 52.2% of the sample were male, 7.8% in their teens, 17.1% in their twenties, 28.2% in their thirties, 24.8% in their forties, 11.4% in their fifties, and 10.7% aged sixty or older. Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample. Also note that for the men it was only fathers who were asked, and for women it was either all married women or those with children; the stats aren’t quite clear,

I get as much or as little pocket money as I need to get, and usually use about 400 yen per weekday, plus charging lunch at the work canteen to my credit card.

Buttering up your Japanese wife

No, it’s not a new adult video from Japan, but instead one of a pair of surveys about techniques people use to get into their spouse’s good books, for both men currying favour with their wives and women currying favour with their husbands. Oh, and if you haven’t guessed already, this one too is of course from goo Ranking.

This is a great list! However, for number 7, keep listening until she’s said everything, if I did that I could spend all day at it… Number 2, taking the initiative on the housework, wouldn’t work for me as evn though I do the majority (just) at the weekend, helping with her half is difficult as she’s very particular, even down to the colour of clothes pegs to use when hanging out the washing!

From my point of view, her curry and stew are probably her best way to butter me up, followed by a day where not just me, but both of us needn’t do much more than the basic housework. We had one of these days today, which was nice.

Summer-time fun for two in Japan

From next weekend it’s the summer holidays for most Japanese workers, so goo Ranking took a look at what summer activity people think would be a good way to get their date alone, for both men and women.

I’m split between whether the results of this survey are sweet and innocent, or naive and repressed. Watching fireflies is a good answer, but water pistol fights? Doing dares? I’m also not sure how beach volleyball fits in – is it one-on-one? Two-a-side mixed doubles?

Beach date FAIL

An all-too-short survey this time from goo Ranking, looking at what people don’t want to see from their partner on the beach or at the pool, for both women discussing their men and men discussing their women.

My brother recently posted a photo of himself to his blog which broke the vast majority of the rules, but to save you the anguish of having to witness that snap, instead here’s an extremely naff advert for extremely naff beachwear that appears far too often on Japanese television:

The music is by mihimaru GT, singing “Wake up and take my hand, you could have sentimental chickens”, or something like that. The person with the big hair is a professional idiot who goes by the stage name of Suzanne, and has a sister called Margarine.

Oh, and I guess the “strange sun-tanning” refers to getting a strapless tan.

What your Japanese girlfriend should quit before marriage

It’s Sunday, so it must be silly goo Ranking time! This time we look at what behaviour people can (or would, or did) put up with from a partner when they are going out together, but want them to stop doing once they marry, for both men putting up with women and women putting up with men.

Demographics

Between the 21st and 25th of May 2009 1,082 members of the goo Research monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 51.4% of the sample were male, 7.3% were in their teens, 16.0% in their twenties, 28.1% in their thirties, 27.9% in their forties, 10.8% in their fifties, and 9.9% aged sixty or older. Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample. Note that this survey was for the 556 men only.

Call me old-fashioned, but being unfaithful or staying out overnight without letting me know is a great big sign, regardless of how wonderful she might be with me, that things aren’t going to last, and hoping that she’ll stop is just fulling myself.

This reminds me of a survey from two years ago on marriage deal-breakers that you might want to cross-reference with!
