What you definitely cannot show your Japanese girlfriend

Here’s my favourite kind of goo Ranking, those looking at the dark corners of inter-personal relationships in Japan, with this instance being of what you definitely cannot show to your lover, for both women not showing men and men not showing women, although looking at the answers I wonder if people were asked to answer from their school days?

Demographics

On the 19th of November 2009 1,166 members of the goo Research monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 59.9% of the sample were female, 13.4% in their teens, 20.6% in their twenties, 28.2% in their thirties, 23.2% in their forties, 8.3% in their fifties, and 6.3% aged sixty or older.

Thinking about number three for men, my mother slipped into our Christmas parcel my graduation photograph, which my wife found before I had a chance to shred it! Thanks Mum!

I’m curious about the love letters people couldn’t send – why would that be? Too soppy, too racey, or just writing them like a diary and were never meant to be sent?

New Year nengajo postcard FAIL

One of my New Year resolutions was to stop doing FAIL headlines, but it falls by the wayside with this look from goo Ranking at what things about New Year nengajo postcards give you that FAIL feeling.

This is not FAILs on one’s own behalf, but the sinking feeling seeing the sender’s fail.

As my wife has a relatively common family name, but it is spelt with an uncommon combination of kanji characters, name mistakes are par for the course, although she does get a little annoyed if someone gets her given name wrong. I’ve once had the all blank card, and all my postcards this year were all print as I just didn’t feel like adding a few words extra. I also got the unknown postcard this year from (I think) an ex-colleague who I might have invited to my wedding, but I just couldn’t place a face to the name!

If I cared about him, I would have also had a feeling of disappointment when for the second year in a row when my boss sent my postcard to my old address, and even though they will often return incorrectly-addressed postcards before the New Year, he instead handed a card to me (and another person in the office) on the second day at work.

Diet methods Japanese want to try

Wii FatFeeling all bloated after New Year and looking to shed a few kilos? This recent ranking survey from goo Ranking looked at what food-related diets people wanted to try.

I’ve not heard of the vast majority of the ones below! Kanten has been popular for a few years, as it has zero calories but a lot of texture, so works well for padding out the volume of food. The morning banana diet has also been big the last couple of years, especially after a rather large opera singer lost a good bit of weight on it – eat one or two or three bananas first thing with warm water, wait half an hour and then have a normal breakfast. Eat your usual food, but if you get peckish during the day, have another banana.

Japanese urban legends people believed in

This set of Japanese urban legends that people just thought were true from goo Ranking is interesting, especially when compared to a previous Japanese urban legends survey I translated a while back.

Number 2 is actually true, although it is for promotional reasons:

Number 5 is also actually almost true, although the school is in Shizuoka, I think. The kids gargle with it, as green tea has an anti-bacterial effect. I’ve seen it on the television, so it must be true!

When I was a kid, the one I believed the most was that Malboro was secretly sponsered by the KKK due to various hidden ciphers.

Highs and lows of love in 2009

I’ll round out the roundup of the year through rankings with a look by goo Ranking at the highs and lows in love for 2009.

Given the subject matter of the survey, I presume only unmarried members of the sample completed it.

I’m married, so I’m not allowed to have any highs or lows!

Political expectations for Japan in 2009

With a new government in place I was hoping for a more interesting set of expectations from the Japanese government, but the goo Ranking results were quite frankly bland.

My number one hope is for a country where the Prime Minister has vision, and can implement that vision. Koizumi did, but the three guys following him had nothing or just wooly dreams of a “beautiful country”, and now we have a guy whose wife has visions, but he is wasting all his political capital trying to keep the two miniscule minority parties happy with his “fraternity” ideal.

What I wish I’d put more effort into at work this year

Thinking about your New Year Resolutions? This recent ranking survey from goo Ranking into what people wish they’d put more effort into this year might give you a hint or two.

I think last year I did pretty well with networking outside the company by putting more effort into LinkedIn, but internal networking could be improved, but given the average corporate drone in the office, the motivation is just not there!

What was in vogue in 2009, and will be in vogue in 2010

Yahoo! Value Insight recently published the results of their look into your 2009 and 2010.

Demographics

Between the 2nd and 4th of December 2009 1,000 members of the Yahoo! Value Insight monitor panel. The sample was exactly 50:50 male and female, 17.6% in their twenties, 22.1% in their thirties, 19.3% in their forties, 20.9% in their fifties, and 20.1% in their sixties.

My kanji to sum up my year from a work perspective would probably be 鬱, which I’ll leave you to look up. My in vogue items would be masks (not me personally, though) and limited edition snacks – this year it’s not just millions of Kit-Kat flavours, but just about every brand has been pumping out a new limited edition every month. This month alone I’ve bought the following limited editions: milk coffee and sparkling strawberry Kit-Kats, berry Pocky, two different kinds of strawberry Takenoko no Sato, strawberry Pie no Mori, and two other winter chocolates.

End of year (bonenkai) party FAIL

‘Tis the season where colleagues go out drinking to a 忘年会, bonenkai, the forget the year party, and at these times usually the most junior person in the office has the responsibility of organising the booze-up. So, goo Ranking decided to look at what failures and what trouble befell organisers.

Demographics

Between the 23rd and 26th of October 2009 1,162 members of the goo Research monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 62.9% of the sample were female, 10.5% in their teens, 20.7% in their twenties, 30.8% in their thirties, 21.9% in their forties, 9.0% in their fifties, and 7.0% aged sixty or older.

Just in case you’re not familiar with these parties, they are basically compulsory, organised at a local low-end eating place with a two-hour plan of party trays at the table with free drink. The usual budget is 4,000 to 5,000 yen.

I cannot remember any particular failure from the organisers of parties I’ve attended, although there’s the usual trouble of no-one gathering at the required time and stragglers coming in halfway through.

Fancy some canned tripe, whale or even curried seal?

This survey from goo Ranking is more than likely to put you off your food, with a look at what canned foods people might like to try.

Canned Fuji air is hardly a foodstuff, but we’ll let that one go. Looking at the list, there’s nothing I fancy eating…
