American drama series to watch over the Christmas holidays

With Japan too about to enter the holiday season, what better than to curl up in front of the telly and watch an American drama series from start to finish? This was the premise of a recent goo Ranking survey.

Demographics

Between the 19th and 22nd of November 2010 1,171 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 50.2% of the sample were female, 11.3% in their teens, 19.1% in their twenties, 29.0% in their thirties, 23.4% in their forties, 9.6% in their fifties, and 7.6% aged sixty or older. Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample.

There’s six in the list I’ve never heard of, and another eight I’ve never even seen a episode of, although I came to Japan before most of these 14 started. All I’ve seen of 24 is this:

Oh, and Merry Christmas to all my readers!

If he’s reading my blog, my direct boss does none of these. If he’s not, he does at least 1, 5, 9 and 11.

Problems with your bidie-in

As well as informing my readers about Japan, I also like to throw in some of my own heritage, here the word bidie-in, a far better word than the clinical cohabitee, the subject of this recent survey from goo Ranking into what people could not stand about their bidie-in.

Demographics

Over the 21st and 22nd of October 2010 1,075 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 66.3% of the sample were female, 9.9% in their teens, 18.1% in their twenties, 30.9% in their thirties, 24.7% in their forties, 8.8% in their fifties, and 7.5% aged sixty or older. Single this Christmas?

In Japan, it is the Christmas tradition that if you have a family you eat Kentucky Fried Chicken, if you have a partner you spend the night at a posh hotel, but for singles, what? goo Ranking decided it would be trying to find a partner, so this recent survey looked at what unattached people would do to try to find someone by Christmas.

Demographics

Over the 21st and 22nd of September 2010 1,072 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 68.2% of the sample were female, 10.4% in their teens, 18.0% in their twenties, 29.8% in their thirties, 26.2% in their forties, 8.7% in their fifties, and 7.0% aged sixty or older. Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample.

If none of the below work for you, try this article for some hints:

Your ideal otaku girlfriend

Another fun survey from goo Ranking looked at what kind of otaku girlfriend it would be fun to have.

Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample. This question is for the males only.

Looking at the answers, I’m surprised that cosplay came in as low as position 10. Perhaps the problem is that we hope for this:

Cosplay Harajuku 2010 divers 10

But get this:

white lolitas

Or even this:

Italy, Australia and France ideal honeymoon destinations

This recent survey from goo Ranking looked at choices for destinations for overseas honeymoons. The question was suitably worded to be inclusive of not just the about to marry people, but also the already married and single people.

Thailand probably comes dead last due to the recent civil unrest being fresh in people’s minds, I suspect. I was surprised to see that South Korea did not feature in the list, although I suppose it doesn’t have a resort image. If I was going on honeymoon again, I’d probably choose New Zealand, especially if starting from Japan.

I fortunately have none in the top 10, although about half of the ones in the bottom 10. Paired glasses would be downright creepy for me – here’s a glasses pair look from Japan (the only pair look of any kind I could find on flickr!) from Coal Miki.

Fighting words from your Japanese spouse

Here’s an excellent survey from goo Ranking, looking at what words from your spouse light the blue touchpaper, for both what wives hear from their husbands and what husbands hear from their wives.

If some of the comments don’t sound like argument starters, try reading them again in a sarcastic tone!

For me irritating my wife, it’s mostly if I say I’m tired, so she’s got me trained these days to realise I have to keep my mouth shut at these junctures.

Forgivable faults in fetching fellows

It’s a bit late for a Saturday survey, so instead we’ll start Sunday early with a look with goo Ranking at what faults in their ideal hunk could Japanese women compomise on.

Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample. This survey was for the women only.

The question is implying that it is only the guy’s face that is perfect, as one’s ideal mate would not have faults, obviously! Unfortunately, there’s no answer “I’m not that shallow to choose people on looks alone”.

Surprising facts about Kanto versus Kansai

The two biggest urban areas of Japan are Tokyo and Osaka, and the areas around them are respectively known as Kanto and Kansai. The two have many differences in habits that even the Japanese themselves find surprising, that being the subject of this recent survey from goo Ranking.

Here’s evidence from flickr of number 1 – left is Osaka, right is Tokyo.

Benchless in OsakaDownhill Escalator

I only knew four of them – the slices per loaf is completely new and quite surprising to me, for instance. I’m not sure why noodle broth was a surprise, as I thought that was pretty common knowledge. However, the first (and last, I hope) time tasting Kanto-style was surprising – there seemed to be about a week’s worth of salt in the pitch-black soup versus the clear and mild Kansai flavour.
