Strong and cool Japanese women: part 1 of 2

A strong and cool Japanese woman's work-life balance is? graph of japanese statisticsA recent survey from iShare took a look at strong and cool Japanese women, a follow-on from looks at guys earning more than 10 million yen and guys with more than 10 million in the bank. They’ll be a look at strong and cool men later this week.

Demographics

Over the 18th and 19th of October 2010 2,122 members of the CLUB BBQ free email forwarding service in full-time employment and with a driving license completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 84.9% of the sample were male, 4.1% were in their twenties, 49.2% in their thirties, and 46.7% in their forties.

I’m going to be a bit busy tomorrow, so I’ll stretch this one out over two days. I’m not really sure I can picture a strong and cool Japanese woman right now… except maybe my wife – see part two for why!

Your ideal otaku girlfriend

Another fun survey from goo Ranking looked at what kind of otaku girlfriend it would be fun to have.

Demographics

Over the 21st and 22nd of October 2010 1,075 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 66.3% of the sample were female, 9.9% in their teens, 18.1% in their twenties, 30.9% in their thirties, 24.7% in their forties, 8.8% in their fifties, and 7.5% aged sixty or older. Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample. This question is for the males only.

Looking at the answers, I’m surprised that cosplay came in as low as position 10. Perhaps the problem is that we hope for this:

Cosplay Harajuku 2010 divers 10

But get this:

white lolitas

Or even this:

Festival Harajuku 2010 - cosplay - Grell (Kuroshitsuji)

Italy, Australia and France ideal honeymoon destinations

This recent survey from goo Ranking looked at choices for destinations for overseas honeymoons. The question was suitably worded to be inclusive of not just the about to marry people, but also the already married and single people.

Demographics

Over the 21st and 22nd of September 2010 1,072 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 68.2% of the sample were female, 10.4% in their teens, 18.0% in their twenties, 29.8% in their thirties, 26.2% in their forties, 8.7% in their fifties, and 7.0% aged sixty or older. Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample.

Thailand probably comes dead last due to the recent civil unrest being fresh in people’s minds, I suspect. I was surprised to see that South Korea did not feature in the list, although I suppose it doesn’t have a resort image. If I was going on honeymoon again, I’d probably choose New Zealand, especially if starting from Japan.

Where the line will be drawn with matching looks

A recent survey from goo Ranking looked at no matter how much you might love your partner, where would you draw the line on matching items.

I fortunately have none in the top 10, although about half of the ones in the bottom 10. Paired glasses would be downright creepy for me – here’s a glasses pair look from Japan (the only pair look of any kind I could find on flickr!) from Coal Miki.

Two in three reckon Skype will bring free calls to all mobiles

Do you know Skype? graph of japanese statisticsWith Skype already available on many smartphone, and indeed with Japan’s second-largest carrier, au, now preloading it onto many phones, this survey from goo Research looks at awareness of Skype and other associated issues.

Demographics

Between the 12th and 17th of November 2010 1,070 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 52.9% of the sample were male, 16.2% in their teens, 18.3% in their twenties, 21.8% in their thirties, 16.1% in their forties, 15.4% in their fifties, and 12.2% aged sixty or older.

In Q2, I’m not sure if people were fully aware that Skype to Skype may be free (excluding packet charges), but Skype to non-Skype mobile phones requires payment. Furthermore, in Japan public wireless is rather thin on the ground, so even if the majority of mobile phones in Japan have it installed, calls are still going to have to be paid for more often than not.

Husbands biggest cause of stress in wives

Do your stress levels ever get higher than you can bear? graph of japanese statisticsgoo Research, in conjunction with President Family magazine, recently conducted a survey into stress in the family, which will feature in the January 2011 edition of said President Family magazine. The printed edition should feature much more information than in this short excerpt, of course.

Demographics

1,006 women in their forties with children who were members of the goo Research monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. No further demographic information was provided.

I can identify with the husband being the main source of stress… Second would have to be our upstairs neighbours, or at least our thin ceiling.

3D in estate agency web sites and elsewhere: part 2 of 2

Would you like a 3D room layout of property you were looking at? graph of japanese statisticsA recent survey from iShare took a look at a survey entitled expectations for estate agency web sites, but the actual survey was a bit of a rambling look at issues surrounding 3D, but without too clear an image of what exactly 3D was.

Demographics

Between the 21st and 25th of October 2010 840 members of the CLUB BBQ free email forwarding service who were in full-time regular employment and wanted to buy their own home completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 82.3% of the sample were male, 62.7% of the sample were in their thirties, and 37.3% in their forties.

The survey also notes that on the 1st of November 2010 Sumitomo Forestry opened a new site, BF Madori (room layout) DESIGNER, that allows you to design your own home then walk through it using a virtual reality application.

This second half of the survey plays fast and loose with 3D, as it covers everything from the current fad for movies and videos in 3D down to Google Street View and virtual reality applications on the web. With one in five having played 3D games according to Q5SQ2, surely that covers even just standard first-person shooters?

3D in estate agency web sites and elsewhere: part 1 of 2

When you look at property information do you check the room layout? graph of japanese statisticsA recent survey from iShare took a look at a survey entitled expectations for estate agency web sites, but the actual survey was a bit of a rambling look at issues surrounding 3D, but without too clear an image of what exactly 3D was.

There is quite a number of books and sites on interesting or curious madori, the Japanese word for room layouts. I always check the layout of accomodation when we get leaflets, so I do find it difficult to believe that there is nearly a quarter who never do! Here’s a site reviewing a book of strange rooms.

Lessons: English, yoga and dance most popular

Are you currently taking lessons, attending a school, etc? graph of japanese statisticsDIMSDRIVE Research recently reported on a survey from the start of the year into taking lessons, excluding formal education.

Demographics

Between the 31st of March and the 15th of April 2010 7,833 members of the DIMSDRIVE Research monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 52.9% of the sample were male, 1.1% in their teens, 12.3% in their twenties, 32.6% in their thirties, 30.7% in their forties, 16.0% in their fifties, and 7.3% aged sixty or older.

I’m currently not studying anything, although I’d like to go to Go classes, as I used to play quite often when I was a kid. My wife recommends singing lessons, but I fear my tone deafness would try the patience of any teacher!

33% price rise, but only 8% quit smoking

Did you quit or cut down smoking after the price rise? graph of japanese statisticsAfter looking at if people who quit stayed smoke-free due to the recent massive tax hike, here we have iShare looking at the overall population to see who quit smoking due to the price rise. As most people predicted, the long-overdue price rise wasn’t matched by a similar reduction in smoking rates.

Demographics

Between the 4th and 8th of November 2010 661 members of the CLUB BBQ free email forwarding service completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 56.1% of the sample were male, 25.6% in their twenties, 33.4% in their thirties, and 41.0% in their forties.

One slight problem with the data here is that the smoking population at 21.3% of men and 8.3% of women is about half of the usually-accepted figures, although I don’t know why this sample would differ from the general population.
