Online coupon site finds online shoppers like online coupons

Have you ever used a discount coupon when doing online shopping? graph of japanese statisticsI suppose the key findings of this survey may be suspected of being biased since it is appearing on the coupon site BJam (parent company Fazer), but nonetheless this survey into internet shopping coupon usage revealed a few interesting nuggets of information.

Demographics

Between the 26th and 28th of October 2013 1,107 members of the Fastask monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. All the respondents had done internet shopping, 59.6% of them were male, 13.1% in their teens, 17.0% in their twenties, 18.0% in their thirties, 18.0% in their forties, 17.0% in their fifties and 17.0% aged sixty or over.

I use coupons when shopping online, if available, but most of my shopping is merely for domain names. I don’t know exactly what my wife, a perhaps more typical shopper, uses though, although I think she regularly uses money-off coupons.

Three in ten Japanese recharge their smartphones twice or more a day

About how often do you recharge your smartphone? graph of japanese statisticsThis survey from goo Research, reported on by japan.internet.com, perhaps gives one a hint as to how addicted people are to their smartphones, as this look at smartphone recharging finds many burning through their batteries.

Demographics

Between the 28th of October and the 3rd of November 2013 1,082 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 53.8% of the sample were male, 13.8% in their teens, 15.4% in their twenties, 21.3% in their thirties, 17.2% in their forties, 14.8% in their fifties, and 17.5% aged sixty or older.

I manage to get three or four days out of a charge of my smartphone, but that is due to me only using it as an alarm clock, for occasional email and a couple of minutes of surfing per day.

When shop staff are a pain in the bum

goo Ranking recently conducted a survey looking at what kinds of shop staff people find too much bother to deal with.

Demographics

The survey was conducted over the 2nd and 3rd of September 2013 and 1,077 people completed a private web-based questionnaire. 51.0% of the sample were female, 24.5% in their teens, 24.8% in their twenties, 25.2% in their thirties, and 25.5% in their forties. Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample. This survey was for the women in the sample only.

Talking of number 13, here’s staff getting over-familiar with Johnny Depp:

My pet hate is mobile phone shop staff, who are totally incapable of answering any even slightly technical question with anything other than “Have you tried turning off and on?” Well, one time when I asked about a crash, they recommended I delete some stuff as my low-end phone’s memory was getting full, but it was full mostly down to all the shovel-ware that they place on the phone and that cannot be deleted! Another time, I went at least thrice about a problem receiving SMS-like messages (docomo Message R, for those who are familiar with docomo) on my smartphone. They checked their computer, my account status, everything, and it wasn’t until about six months later there was a software upgrade to their mail program that finally enabled Message R reception by any smartphone in their range! I can’t really see how three different staff were not aware that such a common feature was not supported, even though they had been selling smartphones for at least two years at that point.

Kids these days! Bah, humbug!

goo Ranking published a survey with a topic I can identify with, what manners in public places people wish children would obey.

Here’s a train manners series featuring kids doing adult things to highlight that adults should be responsible and set a good example to kids.

#1249 another in the "children are watching" series

As noted by the poster above, I’ll note that most of the activities here are sometimes seen when kids are accompanied by their parents. However, only number one seems to be strictly enforced by parents, and it does bring out the grumpy old man in me when I see parents sitting in a phone off area yet playing with, or even talking on, their phones around their kids.

Social matching services; few Japanese users, even fewer success stories

Do you know about Social Matching Services? graph of japanese statisticsI’d not heard of the term used in this survey by goo Research and reported on by japan.internet.com, namely social matching services, but once I read the survey I had a vague recall of having heard about it somewhere long ago.

Demographics

Between the 15th and 18th of October 2013 1,078 members of the goo Research monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 54.0% of the sample were male, 13.8% in their teens, 15.4% in their twenties, 21.2% in their thirties, 17.2% in their forties, 14.8% in their fifties, and 17.5% aged sixty or older.

Looking at the sites in Q1SQ1, they seem to be a mix of work-related networking, expanding one’s circle of friends through shared hobbies and interests, and just plain old dating. I could be interested in the second option myself, and perhaps the first, but I don’t really have the free time or more particularly energy to do that.

Two in three feature phone users upgrading to a smartphone

Which kind of mobile phone upgrade did you do? graph of japanese statisticsMobile Marketing Data Laboratory recently published a very interesting “fixed point” survey regarding mobile handset purchasing. I’m not sure exactly what a “fixed point” is; it might be referring to this being a regular survey?

Demographics

Between the 11th and 15th of October 2013 995 members of the MMD Labo monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. All of them had purchased a mobile phone between April and September of 2013, and all were aged over 18 but under 65 years old, but no further demographics were given.

Note that regarding Q1SQ2, docomo only sells the newer iPhones 5s and 5c, yet even though they only came out on the 20th of September, they made up nearly 20% of docomo’s sales in just 5% of the half-year measured! They also made up nearly 25% of SoftBank’s sales, but that could be explained by people holding off upgrading until the new model came out.

When Japanese men overdo the love playbook

goo Ranking recently took a look at actions by guys that make women wish they weren’t following a love manual quite so closely.

This survey was for the women in the sample only.

manual

For number one, women will also complain if you haven’t got a sufficient plan! For Western guys, number 10 is just natural, isn’t it? I’m not sure about number 11 though; I don’t really know what head, rather than face or hair, touching signifies. For number 19, my wife insists I stand behind her on up escalators, and in front on down ones; her reasoning is that I have to catch her if she falls over, plus for the up escalator is protection against up-skirt photo perverts.

A random Google search led me here.

Just 11% interested in a Microsoft Surface Pro 2

Do you want to buy the Surface Pro 2? graph of japanese statisticsFollowing on from a look at Apple iPad Air and mini Retina Display devices, Mobile Marketing Data Laboratories followed up with the Microsoft Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2.

Demographics

Over the 25th and 26th of October 2013 2,204 members of the MMD Labo monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. All of the sameple were over the age of 15, but further demographics were not forthcoming.

Nokia have also recently announced a Surface 2 tablet (non-Pro means it runs on ARM, so doesn’t support legacy Windows programs) that sounds rather good, but the price is still borderline for my wallet once my netbook finally expires, especially once the keyboard price is factored in. I’ve also recently converted by netbook to Linux, so if it did expire, I’d probably be in the market for a (second-hand?) low-end net/notebook to bung Linux on.

Back to the survey, I was surprised to see that the desire to purchase was only 50% or less than the desire to buy a new iPad. I’d have thought the Surface has a much more business-oriented image but not quite good enough yet to replace a MacBook or an Ultrabook.

Almost one in five Japanese want an iPad Air

Do you want to buy an iPad Air? graph of japanese statisticsWith the official launch of the new iPad and iPad mini next month, Mobile Marketing Data Labo took a look at views on the iPad Air and iPad mini Retina Display.

Demographics

Over the 23rd and 24th of October 2013 4,414 members of the MMD monitor panel completed a private internet-based questionnaire. The sample was of both sexes over the age of fifteen, but no further information was provided.

I won’t be buying an iPad, as I do not like Apple devices. I’ve used one at work recently, but after coming from Android I find it too restrictive, and only one button takes a bit of time to get used to. Furthermore, from a developer perspective, signing issues are a pain and their IDE, XCode, is not intuitive at all.

Note that in Q3SQ and Q4SQ, docomo have not announced whether or not they will be selling the new iPads, but MMD Labo asked the question anyway.

They put what in my bento lunch box?

goo Ranking looked at what food items people would be surprised to find in their bento lunch box.

Demographics

Between the 2nd and 6th of August 2013 1,046 members of the goo Research monitor panel completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 51.0% of the sample were female, 24.3% in their teens, 24.8% in their twenties, 25.0% in their thirties, and 26.0% in their forties. Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample.

Given a Western palate and sensibilities (and of course being vegetarian), I find the concept of bento pretty unappetising, being used to warm food. I personally would be suprised to find this in mine:

spider muffin bento

And this is quite shockingly Westernised, although I could eat this:
