Useful smartphone features for overseas travel

goo Ranking recently looked at when a smartphone would be handy overseas.

Demographics

Between the 8th and 8th of February 2012 just over 1,000 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. Unfortunately, the link to the demographics is broken, so I cannot report the numbers in any detail.

Fortunately open wifi is far more common overseas than in Japan, so a smartphone can be used without worrying about roaming charges. Having just come back from overseas, the most convenient features were being able to check my docomo email via wifi and posting photos to Google+.

Japanese smartphone annoyances

I’m sure everyone’s had their moments when they wished to smash their smartphone into a thousand pieces, so this survey from goo Ranking looked at exactly that, what makes people annoyed with their smartphones.

Demographics

Between the 17th and 18th of January 2012 1,048 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 61.6% of the sample were female, 12.3% in their teens, 15.6% in their twenties, 27.9% in their thirties, 25.8% in their forties, 9.5% in their fifties, and 8.9% in their sixties. Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample.

Broken Blackberry

Number 3 is my pet hate with mine. My mail program gets slow and fails to respond switching between screens, so I end up getting a bunch of taps queued up and it pops in and out of edit mode. Number 7 is also annoying, as trying to view mail while walking (hmm, perhaps it’s a safety feature instead?) often results in the screen bouncing around. What are your pet hates?

What women regret on White Day

White Day, March 14th, is when men return a gift to women that they bought for them on Valentine’s Day. goo Ranking investigated what disappointments women have had with their gifts on White Day.

This survey was for the women only.

The wife has assured me that none of my White Day gifts have ever been disappointments. I should have asked her for that in writing.

Interest in telecommuting high

Would you want to switch to telecommuting? graph of japanese statisticsgoo Research recently looked at telecommuting, a survey that was reported upon by japan.internet.com.

Demographics

Between the 14th and 17th of February 2012 1,083 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 52.9% of the sample were male, 16.5% in their teens, 18.3% in their twenties, 21.7% in their thirties, 16.3% in their forties, 15.2% in their fifties, and 12.0% aged sixty or older.

I should really do it more myself as we have a system that management is keen to promote, but I’ve only tried it for two or three days a couple of years ago. I’m keen to lose the commute, but my main problem is focus!

Stuffed noses and open mouths

For how long did you have a blocked nose last year? graph of japanese statisticsWith hay fever season almost upon us, this seems like quite a good time to take a look at a recent survey from iShare into blocked noses.

Demographics

Over the 7th and 8th of February 2012 1,086 members of the CLUB BBQ free email forwarding service completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 50.6% of the sample were male, 33.5% in their twenties, 33.3% in their thirties, and 33.1% in their forties.

I get a badly-stuffed nose for about a month thanks to hay fever, and for a few days here and there throughout the year for probably mildly-allergic reactions to unidentified agents. My pet hates about a blocked nose are blowing so hard I get a nosebleed or at the other extreme not blowing enough and dripping snot onto desks and tables. Furthermore, on bad days all the phlegm going down my throat upsets my stomach.

PS Vita versus Wii U versus Xperia Play

Do you think you will buy a Nintendo Wii U? graph of japanese statisticsjapan.internet.com recently reported on a survey by goo Research into games machines, the second regular survey into this topic.

Demographics

Between the 26th and 29th of January 2012 1,073 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 52.3% of the sample were male, 15.9% in their teens, 18.3% in their twenties, 21.5% in their thirties, 16.3% in their forties, and 28.0% aged fifty or older.

I’ve not really got much interest in buying any of them, but I’d like to find out more about the Wii U.

Three in four Japanese fathers don’t communicate sufficiently with their children

Do you communicate with your children on weekdays? graph of japanese statisticsAs a break from the recent flood of goo Research, here is iShare looking at intra-family weekday communication.

Demographics

Over the 25th and 26th of January 2012 683 members of the CLUB BBQ free email forwarding service who were married, in employment, had children in primary school or younger, and lived with their spouse and children completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 50.1% of the sample were male, 5.6% in their twenties, 52.6% in their thirties, and 41.9% in their forties.

Question six in particular might look a little out of place, but that is because the survey was sponsored by Logicool (Logitech) on the launch of their wide screen HD 1080 pixel web camera Logicool HD Pro Webcam c920. They also sponsored a second survey as part of their promotional campaign, but I haven’t translated it yet.

In Q1 and Q3 I don’t know if they are asking people to measure the time that they are in the same vicinity, specifically different rooms in the same house, or if they are asking when people are in the same room.

What women think of men on the science track

One way students get classified in Japanese schools and then in their later life is whether they are on a science track or an arts track, so goo Ranking decided to find out what Japanese women think are the slightly lop-sidedness of science-y guys. Hopefully they’ll also do the women and the arts track soon!

This survey was for the women only.

I can identify with most of the list, I suppose, and those I don’t identify personally with, I know someone in the same line of business who does! The only one that stands out as a bit odd is number 7, they tell logical jokes. Perhaps in Japan it has a different meaning, or perhaps it is as a contrast to slapstick?

Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn!

No, it’s not a survey on favourite quotes from musicals, but instead it’s goo Ranking looking at what stuff about other people the respondents are just not interested in hearing about.

I’m trying to get my head around number one – I cannot say I’ve ever had foot size come up in conversation, except of course second-hand from other foriegners having comments made about their big feet. I just cannot imagine people boasting or complaining about their own. My mother does number three, and soory Mum, but other people’s dreams are just not interesting in the slightest!

Wifi-vending vending machines

Do you know that there are vending machines with free wifi hotspots? graph of japanese statisticsThis survey from goo Research, reported on by japan.internet.com, into vending machines and public wifi found that not just awareness, but also use was a bit higher than I might have expected.

Demographics

Between the 31st of January and the 2nd of February 2012 1,074 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 53.4% of the sample were male, 16.3% in their teens, 18.1% int heir twenties, 21.4% in their thirties, 16.4% in their forties, 15.6% in their fifties, and 12.2% aged sixty or older.

There really is a dearth of public wifi in this country, so even if the service is like the one in San Francisco airport which requires you to watch a 30 second video (that can be fast-forwarded through) I’ll be really keen to use it, as I’m a stingy git who tries not to use his normal 3G data.

Here seems to be the home page of the provider of free wifi for Asahi vending machines, FREEMOBILE. They are a bit thin on the ground in Tokyo, non-existant in Osaka, but all over the Nagoya area.

Have any of my readers tried them out? How are they?
