What annoys Japanese in the office in summer

With the temperature hovering around 35 degrees Celcius outside, and Cool Biz meaning that it’s about 28 degrees Celcius inside the typical office, tempers are bound to be frayed, so this survey from goo Ranking looked at what aspects of their co-workers annoyed people in the office in summer.

Demographics

Over the 8th and 9th of June 2012 1,092 members of the goo Research monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 60.1% of the sample were female, 10.8% in their teens, 15.8% in their twenties, 28.9% in their thirties, 26.3% in their forties, 10.2% in their fifties, and 8.0% aged sixty or older. Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample.

I’m probably guilty of causing the first (or more correctly number 16), as I have some scented underarm deodorant in the office, so I’m sure my colleagues at least notice it! I also do tend to get a bit shivery when the air conditioner is over-strong. Number 10 annoys me, although the one person who excessively faps his fan at least does work.

Doyou no Ushi no Hi – Eel Day in Japan

Would you want to eat African eel? graph of japanese statisticsToday, the 27th of July, is the one day of the year where people traditionally eat eel, usually grilled over charcoal, as a “stamina food”, a meal presumed to give one the stamina to last out the hot summer days, and is the topic of this survey from Macromill Research.

Demographics

Over the 5th and 6th of July 2012 500 members of the Macromill monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. The sample was exactly 50:50 male and female, and exactly 20% in their twenties, 20% in their thirties, 20% in their forties, 20% in their fifties, and 20% aged sixty or older.

Note that the traditional way of cooking eel is grilling it on skewers over charcoal, smothering it in sauce, and serving on top of white rice.

Today’s television news squeezed in between the Olympics a few stories on eels, with two of the longer features being on eel-substitute pork at half the price of real grilled eel, and African eels being imported from Madagascar. Here’s NHK’s English version of the second story, which also includes images of cooking and serving it.

The North Korean abduction issue

Do you know about the abduction of Japanese by North Korea issue? graph of japanese statisticsIf there’s one subject that gets many foreigner eyeballs rolling, it’s the ongoing saga of the North Korean abduction issue, where about 20 or more years ago a number of Japanese nationals (and other nationals) were abducted by agents of North Korea, a subject kept alive by many politicians for political ends, as this survey from the Cabinet Office Japan perhaps demonstrates.

Demographics

Between the 7th and 17th of June 2012, 3,000 Japanese citizens aged 20 or older were selected at random from residency records were approached for face to face interviews. 1,912 people chose to answer the questions, but more detailed demographics were not provided. Note that this is the first time that selection method in these Cabinet Office surveys have mentioned that it is citizens; up until now it has just said people over 20, but since foreigners have recently been added to the main registry system, and that registry is used as the source for the random sampling, I presume they have decided to add the extra qualification.

There’s a number of reasons why North Korean abductions induce eye-rolling. For my part, it’s a combination of it being raised to such a level as appearing to sticking a spoke in the wheel of the six country talks on the DPRK, that the Koreans have said themselves that they consider the matter finalised, and by the most likely reality that the remaining missing people are dead. There’s also victims of international divorces gone bad who bring up the dissonance between Japan’s response to child abductions and North Korean abductions.

Note that the blue flag that the Prime Minister and other politicians wear is their yellow ribbon for the abductees.

Which Japanese Olympians will Japan be following?

Are you interested in the London Olympics? graph of japanese statisticsWith the London Olympics opening at the weekend, now is a good time to look at this survey from Macromill Research into said London Olympics.

Demographics

Over the 20th and 21st of June 2012 500 members of the Macromill monitor group completed a private online questionnaire. The sample was exactly 250:250 male to female, and 25% in their twenties, 25% in their thirties, 25% in their forties, and 25% in their fifties.

I’ll probably watch nothing more than the highlight shows, myself, and perhaps the finals of the short-track athletics.

Looking at the list below, from what I know Kohei Uchimura should easily take gold in the men’s gymnastics, but Kosuke Kitajima is perhaps going to struggle to get gold. Koji Murofushi is over the hill, I think, but the women’s football team should get some colour of medal, although I suppose it depends on who they end up playing against in the knock-out stages.

The worst things about Japanese public toilets

goo Ranking decided to have a look inside Japan’s public toilets and find out what annoys people when they use the facilities.

I’m very sensitive when it comes to public toilets, so most of these below can cause me to abort my mission. American toilets with the 30 centimetres of free space around floor-level is another pet hate.

As the list below might be a bit traumatic, to calm you down here is Hello Kitty:

Eye City Japan’s favourite contact lens shop

Where did you most recently buy contact lenses from? graph of japanese statisticsThe huge set of contact lens and glasses chains will make little sense to anyone outside Japan, but in this survey by iShare into shops where one has purchased contact lens the surprising to me result was that just over a quarter last bought lenses online.

Demographics

Between the 1st and 4th of June 2012 1,183 members of the CLUB BBQ free email forwarding service completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 66.6% of the sample were female, ages ranged from 16 to 60 years old, and the respondents came from all over Japan, and all had purchased contact lenses for their own use within the last year.

When I first came to Japan I wore contact lenses, but I never replaced them in Japan. Furthermore, I banged my head somewhere and lost a lens, so rather than try to struggle my way through buying contact lenses in Japanese, I just gave up and switched to glasses!

I’m really surprised though at just 28% buying online; I would have thought given that most people choose soft lenses (actually, I don’t have a statistic for that!), and given the reliability of delivery services, placing a regular online order would be the cheapest way to refill one’s prescription. I wonder how the prices compare? Do any of my readers have experience of this?

Feeling a neglected spouse

A nice and cheery survey today from goo Ranking, looking at when spouses feel their other half is neglacting them, for both neglected wives and neglected husbands.

Demographics

Over the 19th and 20th of April 2012 1,092 members of the goo Research monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 60.5% of the sample were female, 11.3% in their teens, 17.0% in their twenties, 28.4% in their thirties, 25.5% in their forties, 10.2% in their fifties, and 7.7% aged sixty or older. Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample. I’m not sure how unmarried people were supposed to answer this one, if at all.

I’m only guilty of number seven, although my excuse is just having a poor memory for everything!

There’s a bit of a difference between the sexes regarding not wanting to sleep together! Top for the men, but just 12th for the women…

iPhone 4S satisfaction six months in

The new-to-me survey marketing company IID (Interface In Design) Inc looked at the iPhone 4S, although the excerpt reported on by japan.internet.com focused more on comparing the two carriers offering the device, au and SoftBank.

Demographics

The only figures offered was that there were 1,000 users from each of the two carriers, au and SoftBank.

A few years ago SoftBank bought their mobile carrier from Vodafone; at that time the popular nickname for them was Borderfone (a pun that works better with Japanese pronunciation) due to the poor coverage area. Looking at the figures below, one can see that things still haven’t relatively improved for SoftBank! Indeed, looking at the data below, I can only presume that SoftBank users are cheapskates who are willing to put up with dodgy service just to save a little on their monthly bills, and of course get a free bicycle:

Young folk now not just shouting but tweeting at the telly

Do you ever actually shout at, wisecrack at people on TV? graph of japanese statisticsIn a survey from iResearch reported on by japan.internet.com into SNS usage there was the rather depressing to me result that young folk today are watching the television with one eye and their mobiles with the other, and rather than just yelling at the goggle box they are spewing their thoughts for all to see on Twitter.

Demographics

Between the 12th and 14th of June 2012 300 male and female members of the iResearch online monitor group aged between 20 and 39 who were also SNS users completed a private internet-based questionnaire. No further demographic breakdown was provided.

You may have noticed that this survey is for a change not from goo Research – after a couple of years I have finally found where japan.internet.com hid all their other survey data, so I hope I can have a more varied selection for you in the future!

2 channel summary site bannings

How often do/did you visit 2ch summary sites? graph of japanese statisticsA recent kerfuffle in the Japanese web community involved 2 channel, the world’s largest bulletin board service, banning certain summary sites from not just copying thread highlights, but also editing the occasional comment to add affiliate links, so this survey from goo Research, reported on by japan.internet.com, looked at what people thought about it.

Demographics

Between the 13th and 15th of June 2012 1,092 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 52.9% of the sample were male, 16.3% in their teens, 18.2% in their twenties, 21.3% in their thirties, 15.8% in their forties, 16.0% in their fifties, and 12.3% aged sixty or older.

I’d like to link to some of the sites that were banned – note that the ban was not a legal ban, just a public warning – but they really are heavily-wrapped in dodgy adverts for dodgy comics and figurines. Instead, here’s a link to a more detailed write-up of the story.
