Here is the second of this week’s smartphone surveys, this time it is iShare reporting on smartphones, voice calls and VoIP, where VoIP is Voice over Internet Protocol, in other words calls made computer to computer using an internet connection rather than phone to phone dialed calls. The best-known VoIP packages are probably Skype and Google Talk.

Demographics

Over the 3rd and 4th of October 2011 1,209 smartphone using members of the CLUB BBQ free email forwarding service completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 50.2% of the sample were female, 29.4% in their twenties, and 70.6% in their thirties.

Voice call costs don’t bother me as the only person I phone is my wife, and I get free calls to her. Anyway, I don’t phone her much anyway, as we almost exclusively email.

As we saw from yesterday’s survey, about one in three smartphone users also have a standard mobile. However, all the questions in this survey referred to smartphone usage only.

I’m getting the itching to buy a smartphone again. I was looking at the pricing and as you can now get free wifi, and access to docomo’s official smartphone web mail sp-mode free from data package charges, it should be possible to run a smartphone for less than I currently pay for my dumb phone, namely 2,500 yen per month or so.

This week will be smartphone week, with three (at least) surveys coming up on various aspects of smartphones. First out of the gate is this from DIMSDRIVE Research conducted back in May of this year.

Demographics

Between the 11th and 26th of May 2011 11,893 members of the DIMSDRIVE monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 56.0% of the sample were male, 0.6% in their teens, 7.5% in their twenties, 24.5% in their thirties, 32.8% in their forties, 21.0% in their fifties, and 13.6% aged sixty or older

As with other surveys, this survey shows that a lot of people carry both a smartphone and a feature phone, but unfortunately no reason was reported for why people kept both.

With the release of the iPhone 4S in Japan, SoftBank are no longer the only mobile company offering Apple’s phone, but now au from KDDI have joined them, and this survey from goo Research, reported on by japan.internet.com, into mobile phone upgrades will not make pleasant reading for the SoftBank management.

Between the 21st and 27th of October 2011 exactly 1,000 mobile phone (including smartphone) owning members of the goo Research monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 51.6% of the sample were female, 1.2% in their teens, 11.3% in their twenties, 29.8% in their thirties, 28.0% in their forties, and 29.7% aged fifty or older.

I’m now getting much keener on a smartphone – perhaps the coming January I’ll finally make the leap?

japan.internet.com recently reported on a survey by goo Research into viewing advertisements on mobile phones, the second time this regular survey has been conducted.

Demographics

Between the 11th and 13th of October 2011 1,091 mobile phone-owning (including smartphone) members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private mobile phone-based questionnaire. 60.7% of the sample were female, 4.0% in their teens, 25.5% in their twenties, 39.0% in their thirties, 23.3% in their forties, and 8.2% aged fifty or older.

I don’t browse anything outside of docomo’s walled garden on my mobile, but even that bungs an ugly animated gif at the top of the home page.

goo Research recently took a look at the lightly related topics of web sites and photograph printing.

Demographics

Between the 30th of August and the 2nd of September 2011 1,010 computer-using and mobile phone-owning members of the goo Research monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 54.3% of the sample were male, 16.8% were in their teens, 20.5% in their twenties, 19.6% in their thirties, 21.4% in their forties, and 21.7% in their fifties. Furthermore, 50.7% used standard mobile phones and 49.3% smartphones, 54.8% had laptops as their primary computer at home, 44.9% with desktops, and 0.4% with tablets.

I print out stuff about once a month or so, usually emails; before you condemn me for wasting paper, in my defense they are emails from my mother and I translate them with the in-laws. Perhaps if I had a smartphone, or even a tablet, I could save a sheet of paper or two a year…

Yet another regular survey was reborn, this time it was goo Research’s look at mobile phone video use, expanded now to explicitly include smartphones.

Demographics

Between the 5th and 9th of September 2011 1,000 members of the goo Research mobile monitors completed a private mobile phone or smartphone-based survey. 58.1% of the sample were female, 3.4% in their teens, 22.3% in their twenties, 38.0% in their thirties, 26.9% in their forties, and 9.4% aged fifty or older.

I’m not sure what silly cat clips fall under, although I would guess that it would be more likely to be self- or friend-shot video rather than other, judging by the relative percentages!

iShare recently reported on a survey conducted into the characteristics of global versus galapagos smartphone users. Here galapagos refers to the Galapagos Syndrome, how Japanese mobile phones have evolved to address Japanese market needs, yet are totally unsuited to the global market. Galapagos smartphones are the usually Android-based phones loaded with local must-haves like infra-red, one seg digital television, and Osaifu Keitai, contactless IC Chip-based payments.

Demographics

Between the 19th and 22nd of August 2011 736 smartphone-owning members of the CLUB BBQ free email forwarding service completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 65.1% of the sample were male, 11.3% in their twenties, 36.7% in their thirties, 37.4% in their forties, and 14.7% in their fifties.

It was interesting to see that people with global smartphones were more likely to use Twitter and Facebook; it would have been useful to select a couple of representative Japan-born equivalents (not sure what would be Twitter, but mixi is Facebook) to see if galapagos owners tend to remain in isolation.

Note that most of the questions below have separate columns for global smartphone and galapagos smartphone owners.

I will probably buy a gala-sma versus a glo-sma, to use the abbreviated terms for the two types, although I’m also tempted by a Samsung Galaxy (assuming Apple don’t sue them out of the market…) which seems to be a nice halfway house. If I was being logical, I’d just choose an iPhone, but I have a dislike of the image surrounding Apple users and their network stinks!

Yet another new survey series starts, web site viewing from goo Research and reported on by japan.internet.com. This is a reboot of a previous mobile phone oriented survey that has now been reworked to be more smartphone-friendly.

Demographics

Between the 29th of August and the 1st of September 1,094 members of the goo Research mobile monitor group complete a private mobile (including smartphone) internet-based questionnaire. 58.2% of the survey were female, 3.2% in their teens, 24.6% in their twenties, 37.4% in their thirties, 25.8% in their thirties, and 9.0% aged fifty or older.

I think even if I had a smartphone it would only ever be a backup device for on the move surfing. On the other hand, if I had on the move surfing, I wouldn’t be able to keep my hands off it long enough to get these translations done on the train!
