Two in five Japanese buy mobiles without research

How satisfied are you with your current mobile phone? graph of japanese statisticsjapan.internet.com recently published a rather intersting report on a survey by goo Research into degree of satisfaction with currently-use mobile phone.

Demographics

Between the 27th and 30th of March 2012 1,084 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 52.8% of the sample were male, 16.4% in their teens, 18.5% in their twenties, 21.3% in their thirties, 16.1% in their forties, 15.9% in their fifties, and 11.8% aged sixty or older.

In Q1, 16.5% not using a mobile phone or smartphone seems surprisingly high! There must be more behind that answer, as the usual goo Research results are just 5% or so not having such a device, and I cannot believe that the tablet market, for instance, has replaced one in ten mobile users.

I bought my mobile on its low price (-10,000 yen it turned out to be) and the size.

More people watching more mobile movies

Do you watch movies, video on your mobile phone, smartphone? graph of japanese statisticsgoo Research recently conducted their third regular survey into mobile phone video watching, reported on by japan.internet.com, which revealed that more people are watching video on their mobiles.

Demographics

Between the 16th and 20th of March 2012 1,041 mobile phone-using (including smartphone) members of the goo Research monitor panel answered a mobile-phone based questionnaire. 57.7% of the sample were female, 2.5% in their teens, 24.0% in their twenties, 34.2% in their thirties, 28.0% in their forties, and 11.3% aged fifty or older.

Possibly or possibily not connected to this topic is a new broadcast channel for mobile phones that has been launched this month, called Not-tv. Today at the office someone had a program guide, and there was three channels available, but it seemed mostly Korean dramas, US second-tier series, and the occasional minor Hollywood film. The other 7 or 8 One Seg versions of standard television channels are free to view, but this is 420 yen per month, with, as far as I can see, just a chat channel tacked onto the broadcasts for live interaction with the viewers and listeners.

Discovering a tablet’s strengths for web browsing

What type of device do you mainly use for browsing web sites? graph of japanese statisticsMobile and computer-based web site viewing, one of goo Ranking’s regular surveys, took an interesting turn in this report on japan.internet.com, where they described the result of specific questions to tablet owners. However, the sample size was tiny so the data cannot really be trusted.

Demographics

Between the 12th and 14th of March 2012 1,093 mobile phone-using members of the goo Research monitor panel completed a private mobile internet-based questionnaire. 59.3% of the sample were female, 3.5% in their teens, 26.4% in their twenties, 33.2% in their thirties, 25.8% in their forties, and 11.1% aged fifty or older. Note that the survey includes smartphone users, and would also include tablet users who had a mobile phone contract attached to theirs.

I’ve considered getting a tablet myself, and if I were to I’d probably choose the four top reasons as listed below!

Nine in ten public transport users check email

What kind of mobile terminal do you mostly use? graph of japanese statisticsgoo Research took a look at usage of mobile phones and other devices when using public transport, in a report featured on japan.internet.com.

Demographics

Between the 28th of February and the 1st of March 2012 1,086 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 53.2% of the sample were male, 16.6% in their teens, 18.3% in their twenties, 21.9% in their thirties, 15.7% in their forties, 15.8% in their fifties, and 11.6% aged sixty or older.

I spend the best part of two hours a day on trains, and it’s mostly email and games, in particular Andoku.

3 in 5 users trust their earthquake early warning apps

How reliable is your earthquake early warning application? graph of japanese statisticsWith the first anniversary of the East Japan Great Earthquake Disaster approaching, with various predictions of Tokyo being due a Big One, and with smartphones now supporting earthquake early warnings straight out of the box, I would think that the awareness of such early warning systems should be high, but the article from japan.internet.com on a survey by goo Research into earthquake early warning applications didn’t report that figure, unfortunately.

Demographics

Between the 23rd and 25th of February 2012 1,066 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 52.8% of the sample were male, 16.0% in their teens, 17.7% in their twenties, 21.4% in their thirties, 16.6% in their forties, 16.1% in their fifties, and 12.1% aged sixty or older.

The app that I most hear people talking about is yurekuru for the iPhone. Fortunately, down here in Kansai there have been few significant shakers recently so I’ve never heard the alerts personally, but I read about many Tokyo residents who talk about whole roomfuls of people’s smartphones going off at the same time – there must be a YouTube video, and indeed there is, but just of a single phone:

Two-thirds of Japanese mobile users have bought online

How often do you buy items from your mobile phone or smartphone? graph of japanese statisticsHaving had two smartphone sillinesses yesterday, let’s have a serious look today at mobile phone and smartphone shopping site use with goo Research and japan.internet.com.

Demographics

Between the 20th and 23rd of February 2012 1.096 mobile phone-using (including smartphone) members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private mobile phone-based questionnaire. 62.9% of the sample were female, 4.2% in their teens, 32.1% in their twenties, 33.7% in their thirties, 20.3% in their forties, and 9.8% aged fifty or older.

I’ve never done any mobile shopping, so I don’t really know what the drawbacks are. I also worry about the security aspect from a smartphone; for instance it’s harder to see if a page is running SSL, and there’s less tools for protecting against spyware – I think the risk of spyware on mobiles is overblown, but I don’t have the confidence that I have on the PC of having a clean machine.

Useful smartphone features for overseas travel

goo Ranking recently looked at when a smartphone would be handy overseas.

Demographics

Between the 8th and 8th of February 2012 just over 1,000 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. Unfortunately, the link to the demographics is broken, so I cannot report the numbers in any detail.

Fortunately open wifi is far more common overseas than in Japan, so a smartphone can be used without worrying about roaming charges. Having just come back from overseas, the most convenient features were being able to check my docomo email via wifi and posting photos to Google+.

Japanese smartphone annoyances

I’m sure everyone’s had their moments when they wished to smash their smartphone into a thousand pieces, so this survey from goo Ranking looked at exactly that, what makes people annoyed with their smartphones.

Demographics

Between the 17th and 18th of January 2012 1,048 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 61.6% of the sample were female, 12.3% in their teens, 15.6% in their twenties, 27.9% in their thirties, 25.8% in their forties, 9.5% in their fifties, and 8.9% in their sixties. Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample.

Broken Blackberry

Number 3 is my pet hate with mine. My mail program gets slow and fails to respond switching between screens, so I end up getting a bunch of taps queued up and it pops in and out of edit mode. Number 7 is also annoying, as trying to view mail while walking (hmm, perhaps it’s a safety feature instead?) often results in the screen bouncing around. What are your pet hates?

Smartphone still means iPhone in Japan

Are you interested in upgrading to an iPhone 4S? graph of japanese statisticsjapan.internet.com recently reported on goo Research’s third look at mobile phone and smartphone upgrade needs, with the report focusing on iPhone 4S-related issues.

Demographics

Between the 3rd and 8th of February 2012 1,000 mobile phone-using members of the goo Research monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 50.6% of the sample were female, 1.6% in their teens, 12.1% in their twenties, 27.1% in their thirties, 32.5% in their forties, and 26.7% aged fifty or older.

However, as the old saying goes, a woman without an iPhone is like a dog without a bicycle, or something like that:

Seven in ten Japanese find mobile ads useless

Do you find mobile advertisements useful? graph of japanese statisticsgoo Research recently took a look at advertisements on mobile devices, their third regular survey into this topic, reported on as usual by japan.internet.com.

Demographics

Between the 23rd and 25th of January 2012 1,098 members of the goo Research mobile monitor group completed a private mobile phone-based (including smartphone) questionnaire. 60.1% of the sample were female, 4.0% in their teens, 28.2% in their twenties, 34.3% in their thirties, 23.3% in their forties, and 10.1% aged fifty or older.

As I limit my mobile surfing and don’t play any games that require an internet connection for advert display, I fortunately cannot remember seeing any except when I go out of my way to check out my own sites; actually, I tell a lie – when I was in the USA last week, both San Francisco and Las Vegas airports made me watch a short advertisement before giving me free wifi access. By the way, What Japan Thinks has a smartphone-targeted display, so if you surf on over with your mobile you should see a finger-friendly front end which contains some hopefully not-too-obtrusive advertisements, although I cannot vouch for their relevancy or usefulness.
