iPhone, Xperia interest both high in Japan

Do you want Sony-Ericsson's new Android-based Xperia smartphone? graph of japanese statisticsWith the launch of the Xperia at the end of last month (March 2010) and heavy advertising on primetime television, it’s perhaps not a surprise that according to goo Research’s 51st mobile phone upgrade needs survey, as reported by japan.internet.com, that the Xperia is as popular as it is.

Demographics

Between the 9th and 14th of April 2010 1,000 mobile phone users from the goo Research monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 51.0% of the sample were male, 1.0% in their teens, 11.5% in their twenties, 3.2% in their thirties, 28.1% in their forties, and 24.2% aged fifty or older.

I’ve had a play with the Xperia at a special shop they’ve opened in Osaka, and it’s quite fun to use, and the display font is much better than I imagined it would be. I quite fancy it myself, but I cannot really justify the 5,400 yen per month unlimited data plan (plus another 1,500 yen in basic service fees), with of course 40,000 yen for the handset on top.

Keitai novels most often consumed on keitai

Have you ever read a 'keitai novel'? graph of japanese statisticsThis recent survey from goo Research, reported on by japan.internet.com, was their fourth regular (once every two months) survey into keitai novels, with keitai being the shortened Japanese word for mobile phone, and keitai novels being novels designed to be read on mobile phones, featuring shorter sentences and episodic chapters, and I presume graphical devices like emoji.

Demographics

Between the 19th and 24th of March 2010 1,091 members of the goo Research monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 52.7% of the sample were male, 16/3% in their teens, 18.4% in their twenties, 21.5% in their thirties, 15.9% in their forties, 15.8% in their fifties, and 12.0% aged sixty or older.

I’ve never even seen a keitai novel, so in the interests of research, please wait while I check Google.

The first hit is Wild Strawberry, and looking around the books seem to be mostly written in slang, in the loose style of emails of young women. Hmm, I don’t think I’ll be bothering.

Mobile email extremely popular

How many emails per day do you send and receive? graph of japanese statisticsDespite this survey from Point On Research into mobile phone email targeting heavy users of mobile phones, reported on by japan.internet.com, the figures for emailing are quite impressively large! You may also want to cross-reference the results with another survey last month also from Point On Research with a similar demographic that showed very little mobile voice usage.

On the 30th of March 2010 800 heavy users of mobile phones completed a private mobile internet-based questionnaire. The sample was exactly 50:50 male and female, 25.0% in their teens, 25.0% in their twenties, 25.0% in their thirties, and 25.0% in their forties.

I send and receive probably around 10 emoji-ridden emails per day, three to five from me, about four to six incoming, I would estimate. I usually do reply as soon as I can, except on the train home as I’m too busy translating these surveys to distract myself with a reply! It would have been interesting to see a cross-reference between the number of emails and the pattern for replying to them.

Almost one in five Japanese want an iPad

Do you want an iPad? graph of japanese statisticsThis recent survey from goo Ranking into the iPhone turned up not only an interesting figure on penetration of the device amongst SoftBank users, but also a pretty impressive high level of desire for Apple’s new iPad.

Between the 24th and 27th of March 2010 1,084 members of the goo Research monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 53.3% of the sample were male, 16.5% in their teens, 18.1% in their twenties, 21.4% in their thirties, 16.3% in their forties, 15.3% in their fifties, and 12.4% aged sixty or older.

I certainly don’t want an iPad, but I can see it doing quite well in Japan, although the size is just slightly too large for usage on a commuter train, especially with having to hold it up for a reasonable amount of time. Perhaps one of the most popular accessories we’ll see in Japan is a lap stand?

And don’t ask me why one person didn’t know whether or not they had an iPhone…

Voice calling not very popular in Japan

How often do you talk on your mobile phone? graph of japanese statisticsDespite all of the mobile carriers offering free calls to family, this recent survey conducted by Point On Research and reported on by japan.internet.com into mobile phone voice calls found that despite family being the favourite destination for calls, the frequency of calling was quite low.

On the 16th of March 2010 800 heavy users of mobile phones completed a private mobile internet-based questionnaire. The sample was exactly 50:50 male and female, 25.0% in their teens, 25.0% in their twenties, 25.0% in their thirties, and 25.0% in their forties.

I’m one of the ones with the free family calls who only makes a voice call about once a month or so, instead we use about three to six emails a day to communicate – email is also free, of course.

WiMAX and the beer case sliding kitty

Have you seen the cat/beer/sliding television advertisement? graph of japanese statisticsWith the trial of UQ WiMAX, high-speed wireless offering a maximum speed of 40Mbps, having started in February and the paid-for service planned to launch in July, this survey from goo Research looked at data transmission, concentrating in this report on WiMAX.

The rather strange title of this survey comes from an advert for UQ WiMAX that features a YouTube kitty which… well, just watch:

Yes, that’s it in its entirity. I’d never heard of the advert, but after I first read the survey I happened to be in an electrical store with a WiMAX-equipped notebook computer looping the above advertisement.

Most Japanese find mobile search reasonably useful

How often do you do word search on your mobile phone? graph of japanese statisticsUnfortunately what this survey by Marsh Inc and reported on by japan.internet.com into mobile search omits is what search provider people are using, but still it is quite interesting to see what people are searching for.

Demographics

Between the 17th and 19th of February 2010 300 members of the Marsh monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. The sample was 50:50 male and female, 1.7% in their teens, 18.3% in their twenties, 20.0% in their thirties, 20.0% in their forties, 20.0% in their fifties, and 20.0% aged sixty or older.

I’ve only had a fleeting experience with the default search engine built into docomo’s iMode, but it was pretty terrible. Now I directly use Google and its iMode front-end, although it’s barely once a month that I use it, and then it is always for “<restaurant name> coupon”, which usually gives me a hit in one of the top three entries.

iPhone outselling all individual netbook vendors

A recent survey from goo Research, reported on by japan.internet.com, into mobile devices (the fourth time this regular survey was conducted) found that the iPhone far outsold ASUS’s Eee PC, the top netbook.

On the 9th of February 2010 1,080 members of the goo Research monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 53.1% of the sample were male, 17.0% in their teens, 18.7% in their twenties, 21.2% in their thirties, 16.5% in their forties, and 26.6% aged fifty or older.

It is useful to compare the outcome of this survey and the other survey I published yesterday on mini notebook computers.

Premium Japanese brands preferred for mini-notebooks, netbooks

What make is your mini notebook? graph of japanese statisticsIn the US and the UK I get the distinct impression that the netbook market is in a rush for the bottom, but here in Japan, premium-priced mini-notebooks seem to be the norm according to this recent survey from Media Interactive reported on by japan.internet.com.

Demographics

Over the 16th and 17th of February 2010 1,000 internet users completed a survey, although the means of gathering this sample was not described. 53.1% of the sample were male, 0.8% in their teens, 13.8% in their twenties, 31.3% in their thirties, 28.3% in their forties, 17.9% in their fifties, and 7.9% in their sixties.

I’ve now had my MSI Wind for about four months; I picked it up for under 300 dollars in the US, and it works great as a second PC that I can use when my wife’s busy with the main computer, or for stuffing in my rucksack whenever I have a solo train ride with 20 minutes or more to kill.

Branded phones attractive to over one in three Japanese

Would you choose a branded or unbranded mobile phone? graph of japanese statisticsThe 50th installment of the regular goo Research mobile upgrade needs, reported on by japan.internet.com as usual, found that price was the most important factor, which goes some way to explaining the 25% drop in mobile sales last year.

Between the 26th and 29th of January 2010 exactly 1,000 mobile phone-owning members of the goo Research monitor panel completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 50.3% of the sample were male, 1.9% in their teens, 12.8% in their twenties, 36.9% in their thirties, 29.8% in their forties, and 18.6% aged fifty or older.

I met a couple of guys from Nokia this week and they were carrying their latest model of smartphone, the N900, and I want one! I hope Japanese manufacturers can bring out a smartphone that works and addresses customer needs, not the carrier’s wishes.
