Only one in five Japanese find net ads useful

Do you think these contextual advertisements are useful? graph of japanese statisticsThis is the rather disappointing (from my point of view) results from a recent survey by goo Research, their third regular survey into internet advertising, reported on by japan.internet.com.

Demographics

Between the 23rd and 27th of March 2012 1,078 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 52.8% of the sample were male, 16.5% in their teens, 17.8% in their twenties, 21.5% in their thirties, 16.3% in their forties, and 27.8% aged fifty or older. As a short aside, I never understand why half the goo Research demographics report the over fifties and over sixties separately, while the other half, such as this survey, report them together. The other demographic figures are very similar in every non-mobile-targeted survey, so I think one can safely assume that there about 15% in their fifties and 12% aged sixty or over in today’s sample.

Recently my advertising return has been remarkably low for AdSense – all of number of clicks, revenue per click, and CPM rates have some days been so low that it feels like I must be running some utterly inappropriate advertising. Have any of my readers noticed strange or even no adverts appearing?

Interest in telecommuting high

Would you want to switch to telecommuting? graph of japanese statisticsgoo Research recently looked at telecommuting, a survey that was reported upon by japan.internet.com.

Demographics

Between the 14th and 17th of February 2012 1,083 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 52.9% of the sample were male, 16.5% in their teens, 18.3% in their twenties, 21.7% in their thirties, 16.3% in their forties, 15.2% in their fifties, and 12.0% aged sixty or older.

I should really do it more myself as we have a system that management is keen to promote, but I’ve only tried it for two or three days a couple of years ago. I’m keen to lose the commute, but my main problem is focus!

One in four social gamers have bought items

Have you ever bought a social game's in-game item with real money? graph of japanese statisticsWith a lot of money to be made these days in producing casual games, both single player and multiplayer online, this survey from goo Research and reported on by japan.internet.com into social gaming was quite an eye-opener for me.

Demographics

Between the 16th and 20th of January 2012 1,077 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 53.6% of the sample were male, 16.6% in their teens, 18.0% in their twenties, 21.3% in their thirties, 16.1% in their forties, 15.9% in their fifties, and 12.2% aged sixty or older.

I play a couple of social games, but have never spent any money on them. On the other hand, my wife plays a few and although she doesn’t actually spend money as such, she earns points from various survey sites that can be transfered to partner social games.

There’s two social games being heavily advertised on television and in trains right now by major pop groups; first is EXILE doing Holy War Cerberus for GREE, then there’s TOKIO doing Doliland, also for GREE.

This one is apparently doing 2 billion yen a month (just under 20 million euro!) in in-game sales so they can afford to splash out.

Banner adverts most attract clickers in Japan

Have you ever clicked a contextual ad in blogs, etc? graph of japanese statisticsgoo Research recently conducted their second regular survey into internet advertising.

Demographics

Between the 19th and 22nd of December 2011 1,071 members of the goo Research monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 52.8% of the sample were male, 16.2% in their teens, 17.8% in their twenties, 21.5% in their thirties, 16.3% in their forties, and 28.1% aged fifty or older.

I don’t click on many adverts – I run a blocker at home, and at work I turn off the display of images and disable flash as I find a lot of advertising just far too ugly. If I click on an advertisement it will be either a Google text ad or a specific affiliate link where I want to share some benefit with the person who introduced me to the item or service I am purchasing.

Electrical home appliances: Internet not very popular shopping location

The second regular survey from goo Research, reported on by japan.internet.com, into home electrical appliances was recently reported on.

Demographics

Between the 18th and 22nd of November 2011 1,070 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 53.1% of the sample were male, 16.8% in their teens, 17.6% in their twenties, 21.2% in their thirties, 16.2% in their forties, and 28.2% aged fifty or older.

One noticable mover in the ownership stakes was Blu-ray player/recorders, with 40.5% of the sample now owning one. As most of the new models of hard disk-based recorders feature a Blu-ray recorder, an interesting follow-up survey might be to see how many people use it merely for back-up of their recorded stuff, how many rent or buy Blu-ray disks, and how many people just don’t use it at all.

Groupon gaining users in Japan

Have you heard of group purchase-style coupons? graph of japanese statisticsIn the second regular survey by goo Research and reported on by japan.internet.com into flash marketing (time-limited offers), one interesting feature was the growth in the market compared to the first survey three months earlier.

Demographics

Over the 15th and 16th of November 2011 1,092 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 52.9% of the sample were male, 16.3% in their teens, 18.3% in their twenties, 21.5% in their thirties, 15.9% in their forties, 15.9% in their fifties, and 12.0% aged sixty or older.

Although awareness of these kinds of coupons has decreased by three percentage points, the purchasers has conversely increased by four.

Amongst those with more cynical views on Groupon there is often the mention of fish pedicure, which initially sounded to me like marginally less useful than fish bicycle rental, but I have since learnt the true meaning, and that they may be banned on hygiene grounds..

Viewing adverts on mobile phones

Have you ever seen ads in search results or web sites? graph of japanese statisticsjapan.internet.com recently reported on a survey by goo Research into viewing advertisements on mobile phones, the second time this regular survey has been conducted.

Demographics

Between the 11th and 13th of October 2011 1,091 mobile phone-owning (including smartphone) members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private mobile phone-based questionnaire. 60.7% of the sample were female, 4.0% in their teens, 25.5% in their twenties, 39.0% in their thirties, 23.3% in their forties, and 8.2% aged fifty or older.

I don’t browse anything outside of docomo’s walled garden on my mobile, but even that bungs an ugly animated gif at the top of the home page.

Office software at work

Is your paid software online or packaged? graph of japanese statisticsAs a sort-of follow-up to last month’s look at office software at home, we now look with goo Research at office software at work, as reported on by japan.internet.com.

Demographics

Between the 16th and 19th of August 2011 1,084 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 52.5% of the sample were male, 16.4% in their teens, 18.3% in their twenties, 21.6% in their thirties, 16.1% in their forties, 15.5% in their fifties, and 12.2% aged sixty or older.

We’re all Microsoft Office at work, and as it’s only Office 2003 and as more and more people are now moving to 2007 or 2010, it’s getting worse and worse with forward compatibility, and indeed just last week I had a file that would crash Word if I double-clicked it on the file, but if I loaded it up from the File Open diaglog all the text would be completely invisible.

Free office software more popular than paid in Japanese homes

Do you use free or paid office software? graph of japanese statisticsAn interesting survey from goo Research, reported on by japan.internet.com, into office software on home computers found that free suites are more popular.

Demographics

Between the 9th and 14th of August 2011 1,065 members of the goo Research monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 52.9% of the sample were male, 16.3% in their teens, 18.2% in their twenties, 21.5% in their thirties, 16.4% in their forties, 15.7% in their fifties, and 11.8% aged sixty or older.

Note that I suspect that a number of people who got Microsoft Office or Works bundled with their system may have reported this as free software.

For myself, I occasionally use Open Office (Libre Office). I mostly use their Excel clone from that suite.

PC more convenient main reason for avoiding mobile shopping

How often do you shop from your mobile phone or smartphone? graph of japanese statisticsgoo Research started yet another new survey series, according to this report from japan.internet.com, this time looking at shopping site use by mobile phone users.

Demographics

Between the 8th and 10th of August 2011 1,098 members of the goo Research monitor group completed a private mobile-based (including smartphone) survey. 58.3% of the sample were female, 3.8% in their teens, 27.8% in their twenties, 35.8% in their thirties, 23.5% in their forties, and 9.1% aged fifty or older.

I’ve never done any mobile shopping, for all the three reasons listed, and I could probably fill out the “other” answer with a number of additional reasons.
