The turn of the year and associated events

Today is a bunch of questions from @nifty around the theme of the New Year.

Demographics

Between the 6th and 12th of December 2013 5,418 members of the @nifty internet service completed a private internet-based questionnaire. No further demographic information was provided.

One reason for translating this is that I’ve just finished sending off my New Years cards (the Japanese equivalent of Christmas cards), a total of 16, I think it was, and my wife is sending another 45.

Research results

Q1 was how many New Year postcards (paper, not virtual) people plan to send this year. The graph was broken down by age ranges, but unfortunately did not feature any numbers on the bars, so I have to guess at the results. For those under thirty years old, thirty cards or under was the most common answer; about 25% plan to send none, a fraction over 20% plan to send one to 10 and another fraction over 20% plan to send 11 to 30. One reason for this could be people living with parents and leaving it all up to them, along with more obvious reasons of using email instead. The older people got, the more they planned to send; for example, about 13% of the over-sixties planned to send 101 to 150 cards.
