What goes on in Japan Starbucks and Subway?

goo Ranking seems to have started an interesting series looking at what typical behaviour one has experienced in food chains, with the first two being looked at being Starbucks and Subway.

Demographics

Over the 6th and 7th of March 2013 over 1,000 members of the goo Research monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. However, the link to the full demographics is not operating right now… Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample.

Starbucks Tokyo Skytree Tumbler

I actually prefer Tully’s to Starbucks – Tully’s is usually not quite so packed, and their menu actually looks like a coffee shop menu. There’s probably also an element of me not wanting to be seen in place with so many foreigners…

I haven’t been to Subway for a while, although I will agree with number 15, their fried potato is excellent.

A Subway finally opened up near where I live. It is such an experience seeing how they operate. The concept seems like such a foreign idea in Japan. The employees are just as lost as the customers a lot of the time! The “Special Sub” is a good idea, but I’ve heard and noticed that they are slightly smaller. However, I still go for them when I can.

My biggest problem with Subway in Japan is how it has missed the mark a bit health wise. I can’t believe they have fried chicken as a side and that they serve a potato salad and bacon sub. Regardless, it’s still a huge step above ramen or other available foreign or domestic fast food chains.

My mother and law and wife went recently and my mother in law was apparently blown away by it. She didn’t even know how to eat it! I wish I could have been there.

PS: The giant subs aren’t anywhere near the level as their American counterparts.
PPS: I would love to see someone put all six dressings on one sub!! That would crack me up.

I eat at a Subway about once every six months. And every time I do, I get reminded why I don’t eat there more often. They may be neat and clean, with a cheery fast-food vibe, but their sandwhiches are, frankly, just not very good. Everything is sort of plain and bland. Flavourless and predictable. No innovation, no boldness.

I lived in Lund, Sweden, as a university student, and the town has a lot of sandwhich shops. A Subway opened right in center of town, and it lasted for three months before closing again. Compared to the competition it was expensive and, again, rather boring.
