I cannot stand my navigation system (Sony)! Some of the touch panel stopped working just after a year of use. The routes it gives me are total bogus, too. I've had many experiences where the maps were just plain wrong, as well (directing me to a "road" about three feet wide... like literally just wide enough to walk through single file).

This is a hunch, but I think that navigation systems tend to direct people to bigger roads-- which include particular stores.

I wish I had gotten an iPhone when I cam to Japan instead of a regular old "keitai". It definitely would have removed the need for a shotty navigation system.

And by the way, one of my few complaints about Japan is that to drive you basically need a navigation system. There is no way one could possibly find their way around successfully with just a paper map (which are incidentally outdated rather quickly in my experience).

To be honest, the navigation I have is nice when driving through big cities. However, it's not nice enough to justify the price. Navigation systems might as well be considered another form of car tax. And not unlike many taxes, the services received aren't always worth it.
