japan.internet.com recently reported on a survey into driving and navigation systems, conducted by Micware, a company that not coincidentally makes a oddly-spelt navigation Android app Comcierpass…
Demographics
Between the 17th and 19th of July 2012 600 respondents between the ages of 20 and 59 were chosen by some means to complete a survey. The only further demographic information was that they all drove a car at least once per month.
I’lll be doing one of my three drives a year on Friday, when I go off to visit various graves for Obon. The car I rent from Toyota comes with a navigation system as standard, but the maps are often a year or so out of date, unfortunately. Indeed, one of the graves we’ll be visiting has had a new housing estate built nearby and opened about two years ago, but the maps are not yet updated and every time I almost miss the turn as there is no announcement!

I cannot stand my navigation system (Sony)! Some of the touch panel stopped working just after a year of use. The routes it gives me are total bogus, too. I’ve had many experiences where the maps were just plain wrong, as well (directing me to a “road” about three feet wide… like literally just wide enough to walk through single file).
This is a hunch, but I think that navigation systems tend to direct people to bigger roads– which include particular stores.
I wish I had gotten an iPhone when I cam to Japan instead of a regular old “keitai”. It definitely would have removed the need for a shotty navigation system.
And by the way, one of my few complaints about Japan is that to drive you basically need a navigation system. There is no way one could possibly find their way around successfully with just a paper map (which are incidentally outdated rather quickly in my experience).
To be honest, the navigation I have is nice when driving through big cities. However, it’s not nice enough to justify the price. Navigation systems might as well be considered another form of car tax. And not unlike many taxes, the services received aren’t always worth it.
