Chrome now a poor second to Internet Explorer in Japan
Advertisementjapan.internet.com recently reported on a survey by goo Research into browsers, a survey that I have very serious doubts about the accuracy of.
Demographics
Over the 23rd and 24th of August 2011 1,098 members of the goo Research monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 52.7% of the sample were male, 16.5% in their teens, 17.9% in their twenties, 21.6% in their thirties, 16.2% in their forties, 15.8% in their fifties, and 12.0% aged sixty or older.
As I mention below, I would take the results here with a bit of a pinch of salt.
Research results
Out of the whole sample, just 870 people, or 79.2% said they used a web browser at either home or their place of work, which does seem rather odd as other surveys have suggested that just one percent do not use the internet at home or work. Thus, how about 20% somehow manage to complete the survey without using a browser is a mystery!
Q1: What browsers do you use at home, work, etc? (Sample size=870, multiple answer)
Votes Percentage Internet Explorer 805 92.5% Google Chrome 207 23.8% Mozilla Firefox 197 22.6% Safari 100 11.5% Opera 37 4.3% Lunascape 20 2.3% Netscape 10 1.1% Other 23 2.6% When these 870 were asked what feature was most important to them, 40.3% said that it was start-up, page rendering speed, 20.7% the bookmark management, and 11.4% tabbed browsing.
If I recall, Japan has a large population of Keitai denwa (what cell phones are called in Japan) and they use their cell phone (not smartphone) to browse websites. Maybe they are not considering mobile browsers as a type of web browser?
It’s quite interesting I have to say. Even in prestigious universities they have computers with no browser besides Internet Explorer. And it’s not even the latest update…it’s Internet Explorer 6 they’re using. But as Ken mentioned, everyone uses their Keitai to e-mail, browse the web, shop, and etc.
Aw IE6, how many more years will you have to survive…?
Arrgh! I *HATE* those forced IE6 places. I expect many of them don’t realize how terrible it makes them look to outsiders, like they’re stocking computer labs with fresh 386s or something.
Maybe they were using a web browser at an internet cafe….
