One in six still has no digital television

Another regular survey from goo Research resets back to one, but at least this time there is a valid reason for it. The subject was terrestrial digitial television, and since just over a month ago analogue broadcasts were turned off (except for in the earthquake affected prefectures of Miyagi, Fukushima and Iwate) it seems a good excuse to make the change.

Demographics

Between the 15th and 17th of August 2011 1,090 members of the goo Research monitor panel completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 53.1% of the sample were male, 16.5% in their teens, 18.3% in their twenties, 21.6% in their thirties, 16.1% in their forties, and 27.5% aged fifty or older.

Research results

Q1: Did you know that on the 24th of July 2011 analogue broadcasts were ended and everything moved to digital terrestrial broadcasts? (Sample size=1,090)

Yes 99.6%
No 0.4%

Q2: Do you watch terrestrial digitial television broadcasts? (Sample size=1,090)

Yes (to SQ) 97.2%
No 2.8%

Q2SQ: How do you watch terrestrial digital broadcasts at home? (Sample size=1,060, multiple answer)

Digital-ready television 83.4%
Digital-ready recorder 20.2%
Cable television 18.0%
One Seg 13.4%
Television-use digital tuner 8.6%
Computer-use digital tuner 5.2%
IP television 1.1%
Other 1.6%

When the 30 other people were asked why they didn’t watch digital terrestrial television, the most popular answer was that it cost too much to upgrade, both others said TV wasn’t interesting, there were no programs they wished to watch, and it just wasn’t needed.

Back with the 1,060 television watchers, they were asked what digitial terrestrial features they used. 58.5% said data transmissions of news and weather that they could view any time and 41.1% said the electronic program guide feature. On the other hand, 24.8% said they didn’t use any features.

The day the analogue TV broadcasts stopped and instead only display a blue screen of… notice… (tokyoで)

they reported on the news that tons and tons and TONS of people called in the phone number that was on screen to find out why they couldn’t watch TV anymore.

So, there were enough people who actually WATCH tv… but didn’t know about the change!

地デジカ probably shed a few tears upon seeing that news broadcast :(
