Well, in the USA secondhand Japanese products such as automobiles are highly popular due to their greater durability. Are products made in Japan for the domestic market not made to the same quality standards as those for export?

This is an interesting one! I think I've had similar experiences with repairs. I had a microphone that cost me about $400... I wanted to get a repair on it and to do so in Japan would've cost me about $300, which is of course out of the question. There have been a few times when I got the extra warranty on things that I bought kind of on a whim... and boy did that pay off! Unless your stuff is on warranty, repairs are out of the question here in my opinion.

As for used goods, I think they can be hit or miss. I buy a lot of used things and I've had a lot of things that simply just weren't working right when I brought them home. I think there are a lot of used shops with staff who don't know what they're talking about, unfortunately. A lot of the time used goods aren't much cheaper than buying new, especially for more expensive goods. Sometimes it's cheaper to import a new item with the shipping and all than buying used it Japan.
