How has your feeling towards used goods changed recently? graph of japanese statisticsHere’s a great survey from goo Research into used, rental, and repaired goods and services.

Demographics

Between the 28th of April and the 5th of May 2011 1,074 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 50.2% of the sample were female, 20.1% in their twenties, 20.2% in their thirties, 20.1% in their forties, 19.6% in their fifties, and 19.9% aged sixty or older.

My wife won’t go near anything second-hand, and as for repairing in Japan, I feel unless I have a direct contact with a decent engineer, the average call-out charges or repair costs compare unfavourably with the cost of just buying a replacement item. We’ve had stuff repaired under guarantee – the last time was when our washing machine croaked and they gave us a brand-new latest model upgrade for nothing – but it feels like too much hassle to get older stuff looked at.

No, I have no idea how you rent food! I could understand renting a water fountain, but I don’t understand why foods and cosmetics appear here. Perhaps it is the sharing aspect, buying in bulk between a number of people?

This is an interesting one! I think I’ve had similar experiences with repairs. I had a microphone that cost me about $400… I wanted to get a repair on it and to do so in Japan would’ve cost me about $300, which is of course out of the question. There have been a few times when I got the extra warranty on things that I bought kind of on a whim… and boy did that pay off! Unless your stuff is on warranty, repairs are out of the question here in my opinion.

As for used goods, I think they can be hit or miss. I buy a lot of used things and I’ve had a lot of things that simply just weren’t working right when I brought them home. I think there are a lot of used shops with staff who don’t know what they’re talking about, unfortunately. A lot of the time used goods aren’t much cheaper than buying new, especially for more expensive goods. Sometimes it’s cheaper to import a new item with the shipping and all than buying used it Japan.

Well, in the USA secondhand Japanese products such as automobiles are highly popular due to their greater durability. Are products made in Japan for the domestic market not made to the same quality standards as those for export?
