Twenty mysteries of Japanese men

I’m back after a two day layoff (for a rather interesting reason that I might blog about later!) with this rather difficult-to-translate for me survey by goo Ranking into what mysteries about Japanese men do women not understand.

Demographics

Over the 21st and 22nd of July 2010 1,159 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 63.4% of the sample were female, 12.4% in their teens, 21.1% in their twenties, 28.3% in their thirties, 23.6% in their forties, 8.2% in their fifties, and 6.4% aged sixty or older. Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample.

Number 2 is something I’ve never, ever heard of! Anyone have any more info about why being able to boil food is seen as an aspect of level-headedness?

Although most of the rest of the reported answers are pretty universal, I think, even as a man I don’t know many of the answers! My wife often mentions number one, but I keep trying to persuade her it’s just her perception.

Ranking result

Q: What mysteries about men do you just not understand? (Sample size=735, male)

Rank   Score
1 Why do they try their hardest to reel us in, but then lose interest once they land us? 100
2 Why are they under the impression that women who can make boiled dishers are a steady hand? 97.1
3 Why do they think it’s all over when they marry? 78.7
4= Even when they have a partner why do they participate in go-kon dating parties just to enjoy the party? 77.0
4= When they are with their friends why does their tough talking increase? 77.0
6 When they think they can meet us any time why does their priority for us over their friends drops? 73.6
7 Why do they want to show off their manliness by trying to eat hot food, huge platefuls? 67.8
8 Because they don’t know the meaning of marriage, why do they insist on not marrying? 61.5
9 Even when there are things they don’t understand, why do they not want to be obligated to someone by asking them? 56.9
10 Why do they ignore us by enlessly talking about themselves? 54.6
11 Why are they unconcerned when a girl they like has them twisted around her finger so much? 52.3
12 Why do they hardly ever reply to unimportant mail? 51.7
13 Since thinning hair appeals less to women, why do they get touchy about the subject? 49.4
14 Why do they find vulnerability cute thus like us with no make-up? 47.7
15= Why do they always hate other guys looking at us when we wear skimpy clothing? 47.1
15= When they go out with other male friends, why do they really not want to take us along? 47.1
17 Why do they feel reluctant to do things they don’t like thus never tidy up? 46.6
18 Why do they not say words of love simply because it’s embarrassing? 45.4
19= Why do their eyes always end up on pretty girls? 40.2
19= Why do they like slightly less attractive girls rather than spunky pretty ones? 40.2

The word on the street is that boiling food takes a lot of time and patience watching over of the food.

Oh man.. the funny thing is i don’t think very many of them are specific to Japanese men, i hear women in the US complain about most of these all the time.
    1. DUH.
4/1 this might be a Japanese-specific problem where the majority of socializing is with a romantic/dating intent
4/2 Actually iy’s the opposite.. that’s how men REALLY talk, we just tone it down when you’re around, woman. Also, testosterone
    8. This seems self-evident.. we don’t want to commit to something if we don’t know what commitments are required
    12. One word… “unimportant”.
13 Why do you get touchy when we ask if you’ve put on weight etc?
14 I prefer women without heavy makeup, but not because of vulnerability, I want to see what the woman ACTUALLY looks like, not her skill at falsifying her appearance
    15. Don’t you hate it when women stare at us when we’re together? Apparently you don’t want us going to parties when you’re not around and getting attention from other women, couldn’t you answer this yourself?
    17. “Why do they feel reluctant to do things they don’t like ” again, self-evident.
    18. it’s embarrassing?

Very interesting that the pretty/not pretty answer is tied… I guess maybe this shows more how loaded the answers were, rather than having them be write-in choices.

That’s funny, I heard that women in Japan are easy and submissive, and the men are perverted and live with their parents till 30.
Not nice to generalize, is it ?

‘Boiled Food’ sounds fairly unappetizing, like something I’d be served in Communist Russia……she just tosses everything in boiling water, dumps it on a plate, slams it down on the table, and tells her man to eat

#6 When they think they can meet us any time why does their priority for us over their friends drops?
#8 Because they don’t know the meaning of marriage, why do they insist on not marrying?

    Both of these answer themselves.

#13 Since thinning hair appeals less to women, why do they get touchy about the subject?
Would you like to discuss the weight you’ve been putting on lately? No? It’s not appealing to men, so why be so touchy about it?

Quite a few of these are begging the question. “Why do they do this, just because ?” Most of the others can be explained by realizing that humans are just animals like any others. So the answer is “because if they show weakness, their rivals will kill them or drive them off and claim mating rights to their females.” Whether of not they still apply in modern society, the instincts are still there.
