Women, have you ever bought a famous overseas brand bag? graph of japanese statisticsI have zero interest in brand bags, and fortunately my wife grew out of her habit long before we met, but looking at this recent survey from iShare into second-hand, pawned and rental brand bags I see there are still a lot of addicts out there!

Demographics

Between the 19th and 25th of November 2009 502 members of the CLUB BBQ free email forwarding service completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 53.2% of the sample were male, 33.5% in their twenties, 33.5% in their thirties, and 33.1% in their forties.

It’s quite amazing to see that just about one third of the younger Japanese female population has bought a brand bag and another fifth have had one bought for them, but then again when out and about at the weekend it does seem like half the girls are carrying an LV tote…

Japanese girls have always (well in the last 20 years anyway) had expensive tastes. This is just confirming what we already know. I was surprised that so many of them found buying second hand acceptable but didnt like the rental bag idea. I wonder why.

Yeah. I agree with that. they didn’t like the rental bag because bags serves as their property.

Who pays for these items? Their father, boyfriend…?
The Japanese girls I know (those that are still studying) might work a few hours per week at minimum wage and have very few personal expenses, but I don’t understand how they could afford bags 100000yen and over…
Do Japanese parents have a habit of offering very big gifts to their children?
I’m just asking… I know in many cultures, including European, parents pay EVERYTHING for their kids, but not where I come from…

So you ask if Japanese parents give big presents to children…
      Yes, they do.

Japanese parents spend almost ALL money on their children and almost none to themselves as they give a birth.
All their savings go to children educations and gifts so their child is not less than other children at school.

You might find it as spoiled kids but usually you have to work for that expensive bags so usually they are not given without you taking all A in school etc.

Also unlike American culture, Japanese culture is very materialistic. Guys in Japan usually buys their date or girlfriend very expensive gifts often.

Birthday you can expect famous brand purses or very very expensive watch.
Japanese guys like to gift a lot so you will get unexpected gifts sometimes as well.

I could not speak for ALL japanese but as a japanese girl who grow up in Japan and US those are the things i realized .
