Galerius, yup, in Japan it is usually the wife who controls the family budget, and often the husband gets just a fixed allowance per month – a recent survey had “I get whatever I need” as the top answer, but the second most popular was 5,000 to 10,000 yen, then 0 to 4,999 yen. Thus, getting an extra bit of pocket money is really a significant perk for many Japanese men!

Oops, I was looking at the wrong survey! People get far more than that. Let me do a top-level post.
