Do you like looking at Buddhist statues? graph of japanese statisticsFor some reason that I am not quite familiar with, a recent craze in Japan is Buddhist statues, which was the subject of this survey from iShare.

Demographics

Between the 22nd and 25th of June 2009 553 members of the CLUB BBQ free email forwarding service completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 56.1% of the sample were male, 38.9% in their twenties, 30.6% in their thirties, and 30.6% in their forties.

This seems like a good excuse to remind my readers that my Buddhist name is The Boy Craving-Filled Head. What’s yours?

I do like visiting temples myself, and the Nara National Museum has a huge collection of statues and other Buddhist treasures, and is well worth a visit.

What do you mean by “do you like looking at”? When someone is christian should I like looking at crosses? Meaning of this is not clear, I guess.

Waste, I believe this question is more akin to “do you like to see old churches?”, or “do you like to view iconography?”. The subject matter has a religious background but the interest does not usually stem directly from that. Plenty of non-religious people appreciate the architecture of old cathedrals or religious art for instance. And many sincere, devoted Christians could not be happier if they were never dragged to another old historical church or moldy old iconography exhibition again in their lives.

I had a Hello Kitty Nara daibutsu keitai strap…then the hand fell off which I thought might not be a good sign…
I loved the daibutsu in Takaoka (Toyama)…in winter he would get a snowy afro which was very becoming!
