I am surprised as many as 3 in 5 are aware of the scheme. How often does anyone buy a new fridge or TV, once in 10 years? What's the point of keeping your receipts and stuff for that long just to get a free stuffed toy.

I moved to a new house in April so I had to equip with everything -- fridge, TV, washing machine. None of them offered Eco points. I just bought the best priced model with the features I wanted and high energy efficiency.

The department store was running its own recycle campaign where you could bring in up to six old items and exchange them for 500 yen each (or something like that, I can't remember the details.) Between that, and the sale weekend price, and the loyalty card, I got a brilliant deal on the new equipment without any Eco points.
