You know, you can purchase the iPhone 3G (and iPhone 3G S in July) without a contract and SIM free/unlocked from Hong Kong. It's the only place where Apple sells the phone directly online and you can use it with DoCoMo or any other provider. I tell some of my Japanese friends, and they're shocked, because they want to use the iPhone with NTT or other GSM-based network provider. They love the ease and usability of the iPhone (Apple's human engineering) as opposed to convoluted screens found in Japanese phone sets.
