Breakfast in Japan, in minute detail

How often do you eat breakfast? graph of japanese statisticsThis report by DIMSDRIVE Research into breakfast goes into far more detail than is healthy, I suspect! The fieldwork was conducted over three months ago, but it didn’t get published until last month. It’s also a subject that has been covered before on this blog.

Demographics

Between the 30th of April and 8th of May 2008 7,965 members of the DIMSDRIVE monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 52.7% of the sample were female, 1.0% in their teens, 13.4% in their twenties, 36.1% in their thirties, 29.9% in their forties, 13.4% in their fifties, and 6.2% aged sixty or older.

I eat breakfast in every day (barring horrendous oversleeping!), but my special treat once every couple or months or so is to head down to a local English-style cafe and indulge in their full English breakfast, or if I’m running a little late, an early afternoon tea.

Research results

Q1: How often do you eat breakfast? (Sample size=7,965)

Every day 66.1%
Five or six times a week 11.1%
Three or four times a week 7.0%
Once or twice a week 5.6%

Never eat breakfast (to Q11) 6.0%

Barring teenagers, the older one got the more likely one was to eat breakfast every day. Only 46.1% of men in their twenties ate every day, whereas 91.1% of men over sixty did. For women it was a similar story: 56.7% in their twenties versus 86.3% in aged sity or older.

By occupation, 92.2% of all retired people ate breakfast every day, with housewives or househusbands second at 74.7, and civil servants third at 73.8%. Self-employed were least likely to eat every day, with only 56.2% doing so. Next were the unemployed at 56.5%, then regular full-time employees at 62.0%.

Looking at the two major connurbations, in Tokyo and the surrounding prefectures 62.7% ate breakfast every day, but in Osaka, Kyoto and Hyogo prefectures 71.0% did. Without having information about the employment status of the respondents, it is rather difficult to draw conclusions. A wild guess might suggest longer commutes factor into the lower regularity in the capital.
