White dog much preferred over black man

Which mobile carrier's ads do you like the most? graph of japanese statisticsThe SoftBank adverts are my favourites, although there is always the risk of over-exposure with the dog even recently featuring in a photo book and a DVD. However, this recent survey from BlogCh showed no signs of flagging popularity when they asked about mobile phone television commercials.

Demographics

Between the 15th and 17th of July 2008 370 members of the CLUB BBQ free email forwarding service successfully completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 53.0% of the sample were male, 14.6% in their twenties, 49.2% in their thirties, 28.6% in their forties, and 7.6% in their teens or over fifty.

I wonder if they’ll have the SoftBank dog using the iPhone? Given that another survey today indicated that the euphoria has passed, will they trot out their dog to flog some more kit? Will they introduce a new character? They had five rather unpleasant cats recently but they only lasted a week or so. Oh, and here is Dante Carver, the black guy who plays second fiddle to a white dog.

Q3 also brings me to another pet hate (as it were) with the SoftBank mutt coming tops as a fireworks partner. Back in the UK, in the run-up to November the 5th they’d be public service advertisements and other reminders to keep pets indoors to avoid them getting spooked by fireworks, but I’ve never heard of such a thing over here.

Finally, if you’re a SoftBank customer, here’s your chance to win a talking Oto-san bank or strap and free Oto-san themed games and deco-mail!

You racial bigot! Slither back to whichever dark cave you crawled from! Why use such a racist and sensational heading for your pseudo-scientific high sounding pieces of rubbish published in the name of market surveys? I wonder if you have ever even taken any statistics class, I mean in high school level statistics - because I do not see anything pointing to college education in this case!

I mean there is no sense of humor in your writing if you meant that to be your safe conduit out of this utter nonsense! Why did you use the term black man? I hope Dante can sue your racist ass and surely bankrupt you!

Slither back to the caves where racists like you rightly belong to in this time and generation!

      Nate

      Nate,

I’m sure you’ve seen the black sambo display outside of some eating places in Japan or comedians and even some singers doing the black face routine on Japanese TV. Now I am not a PC type of person by any stretch of the imagination but some of this goes beyond the realm of good taste. I know some longterm gaijins who end up being desensitized and think nothing of it. Some of the ignorance on the part of Japanese when it comes to cultural sensitivity sometimes rubs off on gaijins.

What makes the gaijin population more annoying than an ignorant nipponjin though is that most of them think just because they live in Japan and understand the language, that it gives them a big fat license to become know it all authorities on the country when in fact, their real understanding of the actual culture is rudimentary at best. Just reading a bunch of foreigner in Japan blogs like the ones that are on the blogroll over at JapanSoc makes me shake my head at how superficial many are.

So does it surprise you that this pseudo-scientific blog tries to interpret data from a narrow portion of the Japanese population and tries to extrapolate it to what Japan is actually thinking? That’s a big laugh because most gaijins even if they are married to a Japanese national still have problems really trying to understand where their mate and family is coming from on some matters.

      Dear Nate,

Are you serious, or is the heat affecting your thought processes? Why on earth would anyone sue anyone else for stating what they were? Am I being sexual for calling him a “man” too? I better watch out before Kai-kun sues me for being a caninalist too. Should I call him Black with a capital B? Or African-Japanese? Or what? “Animal of no colour much preferred over Bipedal Vertebrate of Colour” doesn’t make quite so snappy a headline.

Anyway, I can’t see how you can call me racist when some of my best friends back at the caves are Nig Nogs.

      Love and kisses,
      Ken Y-N

Hmm … I could go off on a rant about how Western Political Correctness has caused more tension between the men and women, atheist and religious, homosexual and heterosexual, omnivorous and vegetarian/vegan, people with skin, people taller or shorter than others, and just about every difference found between two individuals. Political Correctness is about as intelligent as two brain-dead frogs on Viagra pushing a Ford truck up a hill for lack of gas.

That said, Nate’s comments have inspired me to write my own little rant about the whole farce surrounding political correctness and the insultingly persistent “sensitivity training” that tends to go along with it. And what am I? I’m an extremely pale Caucasian who has lost the ability to tan due to a melanin deficiency as a result of programming computers for years in dark rooms and staying out of natural light for more than 15 minutes a day. If it weren’t for my soft-as-a-rabbit brown hair, you’d swear I was albino.

Just do me a favour, Nate: don’t be overly sensitive about calling me “toothpaste” or whatever other name you might have up your sleeve. I know what I look like, and I’ve accepted the fact that I’m not as sleek and sexy as Barbados Slim :)

Now off to write my rant. Wheeee!

      Les chiens japonais parlent francais…

Une publicité japonaise pour Softbank, avec leur fameux chien - la bestiole a rendu ces publicités très populaires ici, je me demande pourquoi - avec de vrais morceaux de français.

Edit : White dog much preferred over black man, édifiant.

Instead of “Western Political Correctness”, I think the expression “North American Political Correctness” is more accurate - and politically correct :D .
Happy not to own a TV set here, I don’t get why everyone here love this dog so much.

WAS OR IS IT TOO DIFFICULT TO JUST LEAVE RACE OUT OF IT AND SAY FOREIGNER OR FOREIGN TALENT/ACTOR?
YOUR SURVEY IS A BIT WEAK BUT WHATEVER. MAYBE IT WAS DUE TO LACK OF TIME, EFFORT OR PEOPLE. DID YOU HAVE LOTS OF TIME ON YOUR HANDS AND NOTHING BETTER TO DO THAN TRY PUTTING HARD WORKING PEOPLE `IN THEIR PLACE`? IS IT THAT YOU HAVE DISTAIN TOWARDS OR FOR THOSE FOLLOWING THEIR DREAMS AND HEARTS. BAD ENOUGH PEOPLE DONT HELP EACH OTHER OUT. EVEN WORSE WHEN PEOPLE LIKE YOURSELF TRY TO TEAR PEOPLE DOWN-EVEN OUTSIDE THEIR HOME COUNTRY. BTW-HE ISNT African-Japanese. POLITE,KIND-HEARTED, HARDWORKING PERSON IS GOOD FOR STARTERS.
IN FAIRNESS TO YOURSELF-SORRY ABOUT THE ALL CAPS. NOT YELL, JUST A BIT EASIER TO GET THE POINT ACROSS.
