I love eating ramen alone and hanging out at cafes alone.
I used to eat lunch alone at the cafeteria where I worked but some old man always ended up sitting next to me because he thought I was lonely. Thanks for the consideration but I just want to be alone and read my book (which is something weird for Japanese I guess. You don't eat and read at the same time here....)

Haha, yeah hitori yakiniku would be pretty terrible.

I can do hitori ramen, curry, udon/soba, and fast food joints like freshness burger.

I found out just last week that my wifes mom can't even do hitori cafe. For the first time EVER she did hitori syoku, and had tachi-gui soba. First time ever! She's like 48 years old and has lived in Osaka forever.

Yes, late night ramen (or early morning train station soba) is acceptable of course, assuming you can stand the noise... I've done the solo izakaya once when I was new to Japan and it was a terrible experience for me, but it's difficult to say how much of that was just me being a stranger to these parts.

And of course there's a big difference between going for the weekday lunchtime pasta set versus evening a la carte, and in a restaurant with a counter where you can talk to (or just watch) the staff is a much different experience from being at a table in the same place.

According to my Japanese friends, 'hitori ramen' is ok, but 'hitori yakiniku' is pretty bad. I do 'hitori ramen' all the time at my local shop and it's one of my favorite parts of the week.
