I have a DVD recorder with a HDD. The first HDD died after about 1.5 years of use--so that the warranty didn't apply. All data was lost. The HDD was replaced for about 30,000 yen.
I've never had a HDD die in a Japanese notebook or desktop. I tend to favour NEC and they have yet to let me down.
