Twenty most popular English sites on Japan

Following up a lead I saw on a post on SEO Book, I downloaded a list of the top one million web sites by traffic. With a quick search for the key phrases “japan”, “nippon”, “nihon” and “tokyo” and a sort, I condensed the 600 or more hits down to the short list below of the top twenty most visited Japan-related domain names. Note that the vast majority of the sites were actually pr0n-related, so I deleted them (and one dodgy search engine spam site) and thus present the edited top twenty. The full data is from Quantcast. FAQs about the data, and an interesting search feature, can be found here. Oh, and I’m at position 225,812, just in case you’re wondering.

UPDATE: I just had a trackback from The Otaku, and I see that site should be in the table at position number four. If there’s anyone else I’ve missed, please give me shout!

UPDATE 2: I forgot Danny Choo too! In he goes at number 9, although quite frankly he barely passes my pr0n filter.

UPDATE 3: And 3yen and metropolis.co.jp! Sorry guys!

UPDATE 4: And JREF comes in at number 12.

UPDATE 5: Thanks to a post on Japanator, I’ve revisited the list, and found many (too many?) extra sites, all manga and anime-related.

      Hey, good job!

Being included as in this list makes it all worth while.

I actually quite like Japan-guide.com. Used it for all my trips when I lived there; it does get updated, but not too frequently. I don’t use it for anything other than travel, though.

Gosh, I wish Asoboo.com made that list. Or Tokyoartbeat, or PingMag.

Interesting… I’m amazed www.digitalworldtokyo.com isn’t up there, as it had a higher Google PageRank (8) than all those others for ages. Maybe a recent slight drop has consigned it to the ranks for a while…

Thanks for your posts, everyone! A quick update:

      Asoboo.com
Asoboo doesn’t feature anywhere in the top million - perhaps because it is membership only? mixi.jp is at just 61,853 but it is just about the most popular site in Japan. I think the rankings are also affected by the US bias in the sampling.

      Tokyoartbeat
      That’s at 246,893

      PingMag
I forgot about PingMag! However, that’s at 97,770, a little outside the top 20.

      www.digitalworldtokyo.com
      Ranks at 158,637.

How in the world is MegaTokyo up there? The site rarely updates regularly (usually just the comic) and it has little to no connection to Japan other than it has Tokyo in the name and the comic is set in Japan, might as well be in France since it rarely connects to anything Japanese anyways.

I could see this up there if Dom posted more but sadly he doesn’t. He is the Japanese portion of MegaTokyo.

      Also no DannyChoo.com

    11. Ken Y-N said,

      August 7, 2007 @ 23:57

Shikoku - I suppose Mega Tokyo is a bit of a stretch to include, but it’s in now so I won’t delete it.

Thanks for reminding me about DannyChoo too. I’ve added that to the list.

VIZ(www.viz.com) is more popular than Tokyopop.
      Rank 5941.
      Now Japan is manga/anime land?

Danny, no problem, this table is a good excuse to link to a few people I usually don’t link to. As you can see, I’ve added in Metropolis too.

Taro, sorry! I’m using the data in the file I downloaded, so it doesn’t reflect your current standing. Perhaps that’s an idea, a weekly updated top 20, which is actually related to another project that I never quite got round to implementing.

Everyone else: Thanks for all the thumbs up in Stumble Upon! If someone were to submit this to digg, I would be most greatful!

I also had a private email asking why the newspaper sites aren’t there, but these are primarily Japanese language sites. I should actually also delete Tokyo Uni as most of the traffic there will be for the Japanese portion.

    17. Joseph said,

      August 8, 2007 @ 16:49

Yes, the vast majority of Asoboo traffic is within Japan, and I don’t think Quantcast is catching it. And Mixi has more members than most of these sites have pageviews. Although DannyChoo’s vader disco dancing and purty ladies is more fun :)

    18. Jon Allen said,

What a great idea. I’ve done the same for Korean websites.
      http://seoul-man.blogspot.com/2007/08/top-30-ranked-korean-sites.html

It comes out with quite a different mix of websites.
The newspapers feature a lot more heavily, all of them have English language sections, there is only one blog and the korean war features in three entries.

    19. RangerJoe said,

      August 11, 2007 @ 18:13

Quantcast is very heavily biased towards US traffic. It actually says in the FAQ

” The demographic audience analysis presented here is focused on US internet audiences” and the ranking is based on US visitors.

Therefore this ranking is highly inaccurate if you have lots of visitors from Europe or Asia. Kirainet is as big as dannychoo but gets alot of traffic from Spain and only ranks half a million.

I think you missed two that would make your top 25 list

      japanseselifestyle.com.au
      http://www.quantcast.com/japaneselifestyle.com.au 10,671

      Japansugoi.com 58,881
      http://www.quantcast.com/japansugoi.com

    22. Ken Y-N said,

      August 14, 2007 @ 23:17

Rangerjoe, japaneselifestyle.co.au is number one! And Japansugoi was not in that position when I downloaded that snapshot.

    23. Ganmo said,

You realise half the sites you are linking to contain illegal bootleg DVDs for sale?

    24. Rangerjoe said,

      August 15, 2007 @ 21:50

The problems with these rankings is they change all the time, just take a look at Alexa ranking, so if you really want to do an accurate list, you need to update this regularly? Will you?

    25. Ken Y-N said,

      August 15, 2007 @ 22:02

Ganmo - thanks for pointing that out - when I was adding these sites, I did think the box art looked a bit fishy in a couple of cases. However, I’ve reviewed the sites, and I’m not sure which are the bad ones - thisisanime looks dodgy for having English/Chinese and the general lowish quality box art, but it’s difficult to tell!

Rangerjoe - I’d like to regularly update, but the problem is finding sites that enter and leave the top twenty!
