japan.internet.com recently published the results of a survey conducted by goo Research on the subject of email.

Demographics

Between the 18th and 19th of May 2007 1,084 members of goo Research’s internet monitor group successfully completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 52.1% of the sample was male, 16.9% in their teens, 19.6% in their twenties, 18.2% in their thirties, 17.2% in their forties, 17.1% in their fifties, and 11.2% aged sixty or older.

I have at least five main mail addresses, or eight if I include three mainly spam-collecting Gmail accounts, although all these accounts get read through Becky!. Spam is probably about 25 per day (Gmail silently swallows some huge amount, I suspect), although if I only count those missed by SpamAssassin, it’s closer to five to ten.

Research results

Q1: Currently, how many email addresses, including mobile phone email, are you using? (Sample size=1,084)

When asked other than work or school-provided email addresses, what kinds of email providers do you use, 828 people, or 76.4%, reported using their home internet service provider, 727 people, or 67.1%, used a free mail service, just ahead of the 726 people, or 67.0%, who used their mobile phone services email. Other sources of email addresses, such as paid services or through domain hosting services, are not described, nor are the number using the aforementioned work or school email. Those 727 people using free services were then asked the next question.

The total number of people accessing email from personal computers is not reported in this survey, but that group of unknown size was asked the following question.

When asked about what measures they take against spam, 27.2% did nothing, 35.8% used anti-virus software, and 25.7% used their provider’s blocking service.
