Do you fancy damning my web site (or even your own) with faint praise? Visit Alexa’s custom t-shirt shop, and buy a shirt that proclaims just how popular my web site is. Note that I make no money on the deal, not that I expect anyone would want to buy one anyway!

The Alexa project’s going well, though. Up to 223,903 this morning. We finally broke past the 600,000 mark.

I had a chance to see someone’s stats who’s ranked around 300,000. We have about double the traffic of that person, which was interesting. Ah…Alexa…tell us more sweet lies…

Ken, looking around the web, mostly at articles that say how inaccurate Alexa is, I thought I’d try sticking the Alexa widget on my web site for a week. I’ll remove it after a week, but I just want to see what happens.

I saw another trick on how to give a click-through URL via Alexa to get extra uniques, or even just installing the Alexa toolbar for IE will do.

Yeah, installing the toolbar and setting your page as the home page absolutely has an effect. It’s so innacurate it’s hilarious. But, people think it’s important, which I suppose is all that’s important.

Ken, I didn’t realise it was quite as bad as it seems to be! My daily rank has zoomed up to 97,201 for yesterday, and it will be interesting to see what putting the widget on each page does.

However, things link TextLindAds uses Alexa ranking as 15% of its calculation for your blog worth, so cheating one’s way up the scale there can actually be profitable.

I guess so! Ok, I’ll be putting that in!

Ok, I put the little graphic in at the footer of japaneconomynews.com. Right now, it gets about 1/5 of TPR’s traffic, but it’s been catching in terms of Alexa ranking (JEN only gets about 1,000 visits per day, but many more proportionally than TPR from the US, where I think people are more likely to have the Alexa/IE combination installed).
