[part 1] [part 2]
DIMSDRIVE Research published the results of a very timely survey on a subject I’ve been keen to learn more about, how the Japanese spend Christmas. Over a week at the end of November 4,312 people from their internet monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 45.8% of the sample was male, 63.5% were married, and 1.1% were in their teens, 17.1% in their twenties, 35.1% in their thirties, 27.0% in their forties, 14.4% in their fifties, and 5.3% aged sixty or older. This first half of the survey looks specifically at what people will be spending money on.
Japan’s Christmas is a funny beast; gaijin blogs are awash with tales of KFC being the ultimate Xmas meal, Xmas cake being a strawberry cream sponge, Xmas Eve as a night at the love a posh hotel, and of course Christmas Day being just another day in the office. How close these popular images reflect reality will now be revealed!
Christmas back home was always a family event with almost no religious overtones, and although I naturally really enjoyed spending time with the family and I probably miss it more than anything else being in Japan, all the rest of the trappings from presents to carols was just a nuisance, so now in Japan I feel them doubly so.
Bah, humbug! Merry Stuffing Your Face Day!

[…] It`s been a quiet few days, I`ve become part of the social commentary on Japan, and work has generally been okay. I`m suffering some kind of Brain malfunction at the moment, I constantly have this foggy brain syndrome where I`m unable to think quickly and I think the students are suffering because of it. I`m feeling like they aren`t getting good value for money at the moment, it may be that I`m suffering from dehydration in lessons but I need to snap out of it for my own sake if not for the students. I’ve never been told that they spend the night at Love Hotels (which are cheap and seedy) but rather that they spend a night at a really nice hotel after a meal and a gift.
Is there any explanation for the fluctuating sample size? It’s sometimes 2062 and sometimes 1508.

Shari, yes, you’re correct - I’ve updated the story to reflect this.
As for the sample size, Q1SQ5 and Q1SQ6 are for the subset who are planning on sending presents, rather than the larger subset of those who are planning to do anything.
Thanks for the comment!

Me and my brother lived in Japan for a few years, just as recently as last year and my 1st x-mas there my brother told me that on x-mas they eat chicken and cake, well i thought this to be a joke until my girlfriend wanted me to fry chicken and she went to the store and got a cake….lol While we were out at the store we past by a KFC and the line was down the block, i was amazed by this and when we went to buy the cake the store was pretty much sold out. I questioned my girlfriend about this and was told that when they think of x-mas the think of chicken and cake…lol What was also surprising was that there people of all ages in the KFC line, i would have never believed it, if i had not seen it with my own eyes.
